Hey, welcome to IM. Great first post. I was there last month. You got some really amazing shots. They bring me right back. I was there on a fleeting visit, really, but clearly you gave yourself time to do the place justice. I've bookmarked your link. Really enjoyed them.
Thanks Lara ![]() |

Kinnaur - May / June 2009
ITINERARY: KINNAUR - MAY / JUNE 2009 Delhi to Simla by Bus from I.S.B.T. Kashmere Gate 10:00 PM (Check bus timings form HRTC website) It is an air-conditioned deluxe bus. ALL THE OTHER BUSES MENTIONED IN THE ITINERARY ARE LOCAL BUSES RUN BY THE HRTC. Reach Simla by 6:30 AM Bus from Simla to Sangla From Lakad Bazaar Bus Stand, Simla 7:45 AM Arrival at Sangla Around 6:00 PM Next morning Leave for Sangla Kanda by 8:00 AM Time taken to walk to Sangla Kanda 4 5 hours Distance Around 4 5 kms It is a scenic, but, steep climb. There are numerous paths leading to farmsteads, make sure you stay on the path to Sangla Kanda. Altitude of Sangla Kanda 12,500 fett approx. August is a good time for monsoon flowers, as it is greener than June. Return to Sangla by 3:00 PM Next morning Leave for Chitkul by road Distance between Sangla and Chitkul 27 kms (Confirm the local bus timings) Walk from Chitkul to Nagasthi (I.T.B.P. camp) 3 kms Its a level path, not a climb. Night spent at I.T.B.P. Camp in Nagasthi as there is no other accommodation available. Next Morning Leave the I.T.B.P. camp for Ranikanda at 8:00 AM Distance between Ranikanda and Nagasthi Around 7 kms Its not much of a climb. Time taken to reach Ranikanda 2.5 hours The altitude of Ranikanda is the same as Sangla Kanda 12,500 feet approx. Return to Nagsthi by 1.30 PM The walk to Ranikanda is very scenic. Consult I.T.B.P. personnel at Nagasthi regarding stay at Ranikanda. Next morning Walk back from Nagasthi to Sangla Total distance 30 kms Its a downhill walk, total time taken 5 hours Next morning Take the bus to Reckong Peo from Sangla Around 8:00 AM (Confirm the local bus timings) The bus to Reckong Peo is very crowded, make sure you get a seat in time. Time taken to reach Rekong Peo by bus 2 hours Catch a bus to Kalpa. Distance between Reckong Peo and Kalpa 7 kms There are a lot of buses / shared taxis going to Kalpa from Reckong Peo. Roam around in Kalpa and enjoy the view of the Kinner Kailash Mountain Range. Walk from Reckong Peo to Kalpa downhill. Roam around in Reckong Peo. 4:00 PM catch a bus back to Sangla from Reckong Peo. Reach Sangla by 6:00 PM. Next day Roam around Sangla. Places to visit Fish farm, the road from Chansu to the Forest Guest House and the Kamru Fort. All these places can be covered in a day. Time taken: Around 6 hours Next morning Catch the bus from Sangla to Chandigarh at 7:00 AM The bus to Chandigarh is very crowded, make sure you get a seat in time. The bus makes a stop at Simla Bus Stand. Time taken by bus to reach Chandigarh 15 hours, a long and tiring journey. Arrange transport of choice from Chandigarh to Delhi. There are a number of trains and buses, please check their timings from the appropriate websites. To go to Nagasthi, one needs permission (an inner line permit) from the District Authorities (S.D.M. / D.C.) of Kinnaur district. Their offices are at Reckong Peo i.e. the administrative headquarters of Kinnaur district. The police in Sangla shall explain the process, hence; consult them regarding information about staying at Nagsathi. Remember to carry enough food and water on all excursions. September is the best season to visit Sangla. In the first week of September, a local festival called Phulaich is celebrated. Check details on the Himachal Tourism website. Cheers |

Accomodation in Sangla
I was a guest of a family in Sangla, hence, I am not in a position to tell you about the hotels and lodges in Sangla. Please refer to the Himachal Pradesh section in the Lonely Planet hand-book on India for cuurent and reliable information.
However, I would recomend the following - 1. P.W.D. Rest House, Sangla - It is centrally located, in the main market. 2. Rest House of the H.P. Electricity Board, Sangla - It is the most comfortable. 3. Forest Rest House, Sangla - It is the most scenic. |
