Kinnaur in December (Is Lahaul/Spiti possible?)

Planning to visit Himachal Kinnaur (and Lahaul/Spiti if possible ) in December
I don't mind the cold ( I was touring Leh last December ) but am apprehensive about the accessibility
(We will be going there all the way from Chennai)

Any suggestions on a decent itinerary?

Does the Kinnaur road remain open even in late December?

I think road is open round the year upto Rampur. If there is snow at Narkanda and road is blocked then they diverted the route to some Kaccha road (a bit longer and not well maintained road). This route i think diverted from Theog itself and passed from some villages.
Please correct me Voyager (u know far better than me if it comes to Spiti)

Hi! I only know that the Kinnaur road is the lifeline of the Spiti people in winter,so it's used regularly to go to Shimla and further ,or Manali. Sometimes, for few days,it's closed because of snow.

So if I understand this correctly, Shimla to Rekong Peo should be easy enough
Rekon Peo to Nako should be possible
Nako to Kaza should also be possible, and that is where I should draw the return line

Am i right in saying that?
We are a group of 7 and will be travelling on a Toyota Innova

Hi! If the weather is OK you can go further than Kaza,at least Ki and Kibber should be OK. Read in the news though that the weather was bad the last few days. Will let you know the situation on the ground in a couple of days.

Would really really appreciate that.
Also, it would be great if you could help us weave some kind of rough itinerary for the trip.

We are planning to start from Shimla on the 28th of december and are planning to be back in Shimla by the 4th of Jan giving us approx 8 days

We are a group of fairly weather-beaten Himalaya lovers having had experienced our fair share of high altitude winters and frost bites
Also, a lil bit of risk keeps the thrill on so we'll be willing to take our chances to some (but not agreat ) extent

Hi! Just called Kaza, and right now the weather is very much OK,even warmer than before it seems, and people are driving to Kibber and walking to Comic. There is no snow on the ground in Kaza and a bit only on the mountains. Kinnaur road regularly open,Manali side closed some 20 days ago. No need to say everything could change tomorrow.

I was in Manali a week before the Himachal state transport corproration buses were to begin plying the Manali Kaaza route. The tour operators were quoting a bomb for a trip to Kaaza. Expect the same after october. Besides I think the migrant hotel operators there call it quits once they know the road is closing ...

Regards

Couldn't stop butting in here..

In case Narkanda is closed, the alternate route from Shimla is

1) Shimla - Mashobra - Naldehra - Basantpur - Sunni - Luhri - Sainj - Rampur and beyond

2) Shimla - Mashobra - Naldehra - Basantpur - Kingal - Sainj - Rampur and beyond

Route 1 is shorter as Sunni to Sainj is approximately 42 km and one travels along the river Satluj. You don't exactly touch Sunni. There is a U turn 1 km before Sunni and take the road on the opposite direction of the current of river Satluj

Route 2 has a diversion from Basantpur and Basantpur to Kingal is approximately 90 km. Sainj is further 10 km. So you practically travel 100 km to reach Sainj. This road is maintained by the Indian Army and driving is smooth. The Sunni road has pot holes in between but is much much shorter. Most of the traffic is diverted through the Sunni road once Narkanda gets blocked. Better to get tanked up at Shimla as there is no fuel pump on either roads. After crossing Sainj, there is a fuel pump at Bitthal and Nirath and then at Rampur. Kingal also has a fuel pump.
