Itinerary suggestions for January?

Hi all. I was wondering if anybody had any tips for my trip to HP in January. I am going to leave Chandigarh in the evening of the 9th and need to be back in Delhi on the 14th. I was thinking of going to Shimla and Narkanda as I was interested in the skiing there. But I got in touch with the hotel and they are not yet sure about whether their skiing packages will be in operation at the moment. So I wondered about going elsewhere. I'd like to mainly be walking or doing other outdoor activities. Thanks for any ideas!

as you have 5 days in hand i think you can go to chail it a beautiful place and its near to shimla .. you can enjoy camping in chail...

Thank you, I had seen some information about Chail and it looks very nice. Won't it be too cold to camp in January? I had read about the Heritage Palace there and wondered if anybody had any experience there.

Does anybody have any advice about timings? I have four nights and will start and end in Chandigarh. I don't want to be always moving bags around, so perhaps I will go to two places and then do day trips. Any ideas on day trips from Shima and/or Chail?

Camping at Chail in January will freeze you in frost if not in snow....

Do you want to stay at one place or do you want to cover 2-3 places... What about Kullu Manali area ?
