I doubt the babus in Delhi would either.
You mean to say that you cannot get it on the spot? Have to hang around in Recong Peo for at least 1-2 days? Any way to expedite the process?

Question

Hello friends,

Can someone please suggest, if I wish to see Chandra Tal, Kaza & Tabo from Manali then where should an ILP be necessary for our foreigner friend? In that case, where should one effectively apply for and receive the ILP in the shortest time possible? Is there a provision for the same in Manali, or that is not required at all if entered from Manali?

Thanking you all in advance;

AFAIK, ILPs are required only in the sector between Spello & Tabo.
If that be indeed the case, you can come from Manali side to Chnadra Tal & Kaza without permits but not beyond.

Thank you very much for the confirmation;

Though it is not falling under the Spello-Tabo stretch, but do you think Tabo itself couldn't be visited without an ILP if going from the Manali side? Maybe a day's visit for seeing the monastery there, would that be unlawful without an ILP?

Thanking you again in advance;

What I've read here itself is that you can get ILP in half a day at R/Pio. No hanging around. I'd say it's better to arrive at the office at 10 am though.

You can go to Tabo without an ILP. The direction you're travelling, the restrictions only apply between Hurling (beyond Tabo) and Spilo.
If however you intend to continue travel via Hurling-Spilo, you will have to get the ILP in Kaza itself.

Tabo is within the permit required area , at least I was asked to show the permit when checking in at the monastery guest house . This is a technicality for all day visits though , there is no check point before or in Tabo coming from Kaza.

Considering ILP checks can only be conducted by state authorities, and as you say there are no check-posts in that area, Tabo cannot be considered as being in the ILP-required area. The check at the gompa is therefore yet another example of "local arrangements".

Inner line permits

Hi All,

No ILPs are required for Spiti Valley (Indian and Foreign nationals both). It is only for Kinnaur that a foreign national would need an ILP. If you are coming from Shimla, then its better you get it made in Shimla- you can do it yourself and don't need any agent. If you are entering from Manali side then you can get it made in Kaza, Spiti valley. It will just take 5 mins.

Hope this helps.

Some further clarifications from my side:

1. ILPS are required for only foreign nationals beyond Recong Peo (KInnaur Valley) through Pooh, Nako till Tabo (which is Spiti Valley).

2. Offices in Shimla issue ILPs only if the foreigner is travelling in a group ("conducted tour"). Individual foreigners can get a permit only in Kaza or Recong Peo.

3. They have to present themselves personally (no agents, no advance permits) at Kaza or Recong Peo on working days during working times to get the permit. Officials are friendly though, at least in Recong Peo (no idea about Kaza)

Again, to be clear - the ILP-required stretch is only between Spilo and Hurling. This has been covered extensively in another thread.

Yes, even going by the discussion of this thread as well, we got a clear idea of the stretch which requires ILP for foreign visitors.
Thank you all for the information.

Hi all,

I am plaining with my father bicycle trip to India (so we will not be group but individual foreigners) and I also want to visit spiti valley which contain this Inner Line permit, so I am glad that I found usefull information about that here.

I only want to clarify myself, If I understood good everything importatn

So:
1) It is no problem for me to came by bicycle from New Delhi through Dehra Dun and Shimla to valley up to Reckong Peo without any permissions, only with Indian Visa from embassy in our country, taht is right?

2) When I will came to Reckong Pao, best time to arrive there is from Monday to Friday till 10 AM to have chance to get permission during one day (how big chance I have to get that in one day?)
I will bring some photos with me if will be necesary to be sure that I will get permission (is format of photos like that 35*45 like in europe or 50*50 like USA?)
no other forms which I can not get in that office are not needed

3) I will get permission, so I will ride to area, military let me go and I have 10 or 15 days to left that area on other side at Kaza (is there some penalty, if I will be there for longer time? I will need only 2-3 days to be there but I want to be sure if I will not go to jail e.g. )

4) My aditional question regards another areas where permission is needed, Is there any area between Keylong and Leh where permission like that is needed? I want to go from Keylong through Barancha La, Lachlung La and Tanglang La to Upshi
And then through Warli La to Numbra valley and through Kardung La back to Leh, then from Leh to Srinagar should be just Ok
And If there between Manali-Leh (via Rothang, Keylong and Tanglang) or around Leh is ILP needed, where I can get it? again as individual foreigner (I know that my question regards even Ladakh in Kashmir but I believe that you can give me answer)

Thank you very much for all answers I will be very glad to recieve information like that

best regards

bassano

You should get permission within a few hours. Normal passport sized photos. You can always take your photos in the studios in Recong Peo town.

Ask for as much time as you will need at Recong Peo itself.

You will need permits for Nubra Valley - obtain it at DC's office in Leh.

The permit point is beyond Rekong Peo : first checkpoint is at Spello. Good overview map here. IŽd try to get the ILP in Shimla first though , since it has shifted over the last years with different admins in charge in Peo & Shimla: erratic application of the same rules.

I will bring some photos with me ..
The Peo office uses since many years a webcam at the counter , this image is pasted electromagically on to the permit. I had my permit there last time ( slow season) in under one hour , including chai.
In both offices youŽll need photo copies of the first page of your passport and your visa. There is a Xerox booth at the road running at the upper end of the admin building in Shimla , near some food stalls. Lot slower process in Shimla , but same day if they are on their good side.

Once you have passed Tabo you donŽt need any permits up to Leh and down to Srinagar on the Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh roads. YouŽll find updates on these roads on my blog below. Permits for Nubra are easily arranged by any travel agent in Leh for the next day.
