inner line permit

Hi,

this was posted today in the lonelyplanet forum:

[i]I will be arriving in Shimla on June 10 and want to go from there to Tabo via Sarahan and Rekong Peo . I am running into alot of local Govt red tape because they are telling me ( Officially ) that I cannot do this trip alone . Anyone in the area around this time interested in making the same trip as I believe each ILP needs to have four people on it ?
This is the trip I am interested in doing : http://users.telenet.be/jbruyndonckx/ladakh.html
From Kaza I will then go to Keylong and then onto Leh by bus / yak . whatever.
Has anyone done this trip alone recently and does anyone actually check for permits ?
Last time I was in the Hundar Valley and when the bus stopped at the permit checkpoint , the people with no permits just stayed on the bus and no one seemed to care !![/I

Is this true with the minimum of 4 persons?

It seemed not two years ago , I was offered single permit in Rekong . Maybe the agents use the same kind of drawer with old photostats of passports as they do in Leh with the Nubra permits , filling up to norm when needed..

Spiti - Inner Line Permit for 1 Person?

Hi,

I'll travel from Kinnaur to Spiti this summer and I'll travel alone. I know that the "Inner Line Permit" is (officially) only for min. 4 Persons.

Will it be a problem? How are your experiences with this? What is the best way to approach travel-agents/official places to get the permit?

Edit: Or maybe there are always enough fellow travellers to gang up with?

Hi! When few years back I asked for ILP in Shimla the ADC office sent us to one particular travel agent because we were only 2 people,so everybody could make some bucks(it was 150 Rs per permit, but it's officially free)and got 2 weeks. In Recong Peo we had no such problems to get a week, but that was long time ago. In Kaza last fall I was alone and got the permit with no problem and no questions asked, for free.

I would be travelling to Kaza from Manali with my girlfriend (who is Russian) in July! Would she need an Inner Line Permit for Manali to Kaza as well, if yes, where can we try and get the permit from in Manali?

Cheers,
Shamik

Hi! From Manali to Kaza no permit required. Foreigners need it only if they go to Spiti through Kinnaur.

Arrived in Peo , same situation , last year . Was told to wait and for more people on the permit , two chais later was walked to the ADC´s office with another guy , he signed a paper , next stop permit office , line up ... I mean smile for the web cam , permit with photo , signed statement : no unauthorised maps , no photography or evil plans for world domination .. the usual stuff.

Thanks a lot! This gives a lot more freedom, weather permitting we would want to enter Spiti from Kinnaur. I hope we can get the permit for her from Peo.

Note: We would be travelling on a motorcycle.

Cheers,
Shamik

Inner Liner Permits in Shimla

The process as of today , will add photos later.

*Needed passport photo, copies of passport & visa. There is a photostat shack immediately left to the stairs down to Deputy Commissioners Office.

* Walk down past this building (upcoming photo) to the left sign saying " to canteen" , left ,then up again to where you fill in the forms and digital stuff happens.

* Pay the fee , Rs. 200

* Enter building on first photo, up one flight , small court like room where the ADM. Permits are dealt with in batches , so you will walk in a group there.

* ADM ( acting somewhat like a benevolent ruler ) asks where you come from and makes short comments of the state of India & the world.

* Trot back to first office where the permits are handed out.

Whole process took about three hours with the ADM in place , there were people waiting from yesterday when he was away.

Ironically the whole thing took about 45 minutes in Peo last year , including a token wait for others to make up a full (4 persons ) group and a nice chai.No photo needed , photo scanned from the webcam in the office.

We (me & my wife) got our Inner Line Permits in Shimla end of July straightforward and completely free of charge - were not asked to pay any fee. Just had our photos and passport & visa copies ready (made at a photo shop nearby), entered the courts building, asked our way to the Additional District Magistrate's office and filled the application forms there. We were told to come to collect our permits in 3 hours. When we returned we had to wait a few minutes for the permits to be signed by the ADM in person.

And that is correct - there ISN'T a fee for ILPs. Someone else pockets the money, other than the govt.
