I'm looking at putting together a trip to HP to do some flying (at Bir, between Dharamshala and Mandi) but it's on a fairly tight timescale, so I'd like to get up to HP as quickly/smoothly as possible.

My thoughts at the moment are to get a HPTDC Superdeluxe overnight from Delhi to Palampur to get there.

On the way back though, I wouldn't mind taking the Kangra train from Baijnath to Pathankot and then an overnight train back to Delhi.

Presumably I'd be best off trying to get the whole lot booked up in advance through an agency before I go? I understand that the Kangra train is 'tickets at the station only' though, but presumably an Agency would be able to book the HPTDC and Pathankot-Delhi sleeper parts of journey much more easily than I can.

Any thoughts / advice? I know the Kangra train and then sleeper back to Delhi from Pathankot is a slow way to get back, but I don't mind allowing more time for the journey back anyway.

hello,
maybe this might interest you also
from the ISBT on Kashmere Gate , there are 2 buses leaving Delhi at 5.30 pm and 6.20 pm to Baijnath, fare 249 Rs. Baijnath is closer to Bir/Billing then Palampur.

DTC Busses!

Thanks very much... the DTC busses look cheaper than the HPTDC ones and Baijnath is a lot more convenient for Bir/Chaugan.

Also, DTC have a decent website with timetables and fares, which is more than can be said for HPTDC!

Hi again, Redmist,
are you going there for paragliding?
I was in Bir two years ago in October when some international paragliding competition took place. It looked very exciting!

Talking Paragliding

Yes... I want to go to fly paragliders...

The difficulty is that accommodation is quite limited in Bir/Chaugan, and there is another big paragliding competition (much bigger than two or three years ago) from Nov 4th to 11th, with 80 competitors staying in Bir/Chaugan in addition to any other visiting pilots.

As a result, I am trying to nail down travel details to and from Bir, so that I can ring and find out about accommodation with exact(ish!) dates before I book a flight.

The Kangra valley railway would just be a nice way to finish off the trip I think!

Redmist, hello

if everything is full in Bir, did you try in Jogindernagar?
Here is a link to a few hotels there : http://himachaltourism.nic.in/hotdir/hotdisp.asp
the district you have to type in the district box is Mandi

Jogindernagar is a little bit less than 20 kms from Bir.

Yes the Kangra valley train journey is a nice one!

Good luck

The DTC possibly operate their services throughout the year and can hence provide a regular timetable. HPTDC is primarily the tourism department of the Govt. of Himachal Pradesh and not a transport company. It operates deluxe buses on very few routes and that too only during the tourist season.
