Hello! Does anyone know how to go from rishikesh or haridwar to dharamsala?
Are there buses or something? How long do you think it takes? No one seems to know here!
As a first timer solo traveller I would really appreciate any info! Thx in advance

there's a train from haridwar to chakkibank (aka pathankot) from where you can take a bus up to dharamsala (aka mcleodganj).
no doubt stevenber will be along with a more detailed answer very soon but, if not, then either checkout the indian railways site or contact your local travel agent.

from Chakki Bank (Pathankot) it would take 4-5 hours in a bus to Dharamshala/Mcleoganj..

There is a better timed train from Roorkee.

Train 3151 departs Roorkee daily at 20:35 and gets to Pathankot at 05:45 (2A, 3A, SL.)

Two problems with this option though.

1, Roorkee is about 56kms from Rishikesh, not too much of a problem, there's a direct road connecting the two.

2, The train starts it's journey in Calcutta so can easily be a couple of hours late, if you choose this option, ask your hotel owner for a telephone number to check if the train is running late, the number is likely to be 139.

Pathankot-Rishikesh works much better.

Train 4610 departs Chakki Bank daily at 20:30 and gets to Rishikesh at 07:45 (2A, 3A, SL.)

Haridwar to Dharamsala

Hey there,
only 26 days before departure.
I would like to know if anyone has any ideas about how to travel from Hardidwar to Dharamsala?
I think we will get the train from Delhi to there but after? Do we have to travel to Chandigarh (Train? bus?) and then catch a bus to Dharam? or any other possibilities straight for Haridwar to there?
Any ideas or advices are welcome !
Take care and see you soon !

This seems to be a regular question at the mo' just thought i should mention there are direct buses which are probably faster (14hrs) if you allow for train delays etc. KK

Thanks to let me know there is a direct bus... maybe it is even better ! We will see what we want to do when we will be in India. We are just afraid that Moonsoon will make the trip very tough - we have to be in Bir on Friday evening !

Take care

If you are heading for Bir rather than D'sala then it may be faster & more scenic taking a bus/train to Chandigarh then a bus to Mandi where you can change buses for Bir. KK

The bus ride will be brutal. The train to Pathankot is at night so one can do 2 things at the same time - travel and sleep!
In any case, I don't believe there are direct buses from Haridwar to Dhasa, only to Shimla. Or Dehradun-Dhasa.

There are no trains from Haridwar to Chandigarh, only to Ambala. Which isn't too bad an option, to combine with a bus.

Sorry to correct you, Oh wise one of the hills! But there are night buses from D'sala to Rishi/Hardwar & vice versa. KK

You can leave the sarcasm out becos as you'll note I covered myself nicely - "I don't believe there are....." instead of "There aren't....."

But then you cud have gone the whole distance and mentioned who operates them with what type of buses.
Neither HRTC nor HPTDC operate delux or luxury buses on this route. If either HRTC or UTC or both operate oridnary buses, then I go back to my point that it'll be a brutal bus ride, and a night-train/bus combo wud be better.
