Here are some answers to your querries

1. It's been raining for the last 2-3 days. A T-Shirt and a Shirt would do in the Day, But in the evenings one woolen/ Jacket would be required. Nights you would surely need a good sleeping bag or a quilt.

2. To Camp out take a bus to Kothi/Palchan on way to rohtang, and walk on some foot track and find a good place to pitch your tent. It's better if there are 2-3 people camping together.
Being near Kothi / Palchan you would be able to walk down to the village shops to buy food /eggs etc. If you have more energy i would recommend walking upto Malana from Nagar and camp somewhere around there.

3. I don't know any locker kind of place in Manali, but for the first couple of days you could stay in any hotel in Old manali /Vashist for 400-500 Rs a night, get freindly there and leave stuff with the hotel. YOu might also find some fellow campers this way.

4. Not a simple rush hr but a major traffic jam period.
The Rohtang pass is traffic jammed between 8.30 am to 3.00 pm
Be sure to be stuck in a trafic jam for a couple of hours at least if you reach there in this period.

5. I hope there are fellow IMers , otherwise you should meet up with Naushad of Antrek Travels. He is an IMers who runs a travel Company in Manali. His Office/Shop is Just behind SABA restaurant / dancing fountain on the higher end of the Mall Road.
If you meet him say my Hi..
He is really helpful. I met him when i was in Manali in May. Now i plan to Drive Delhi-manali Leh -Kashmir around 20th of August

Dont Worry..WIth the way you are planning, i'm sure you'll have a time of your life.

2. any places where i can camp out..i have my own tent and wud love to just peg it down somewhere near the city but in the woods. is it safe?
3. any locker kinda place where i can keep my extra baggage while i roam around in that area.. wud like to carry just the required stuff..
4. and is there anything like 'rush hour' on the way up to Rohatang La when the traffic is heavier than any other time of the day? if i get some inputs on this i wud try avoid that part of the day.
5. any traveling IMer in and around Manali during this period - 27th June to 6th july?

hope to get some answers on this...

cheers,
Amyl

Truthfully, I find a traffic jam leading to a wilderness area to be the ultimate contradiction in terms

As is most of India

Well.. I have seen a genuine trafic jam in Yamunotri last month. There were too many tourist and the Paliwallahs and the mules added to the commotion.. Finally, the administration had to impose a One Way on the route for that day. Only people coming down from Yamunotri were allowed to move and all vehicles, mules, palki moving uphill were stopped..

There are so many people in India who are learning to travel that I fear Leh will soon be overrun

No offence taken, but currently not many people live in Leh, the vast majority of people regardless of color travel to Leh, my concern is no more than my concern for the great wilderness areas of the US that are also being overtaken by tourists of all lands to a point where they are no longer wilderness areas

Whether it be India or the United States, it saddens me to lose wilderness areas and yes I do realize that I am one of those people traveling to wilderness areas, a double edged sword for sure, but it doesn't take away the saddness when I see traffic jams in Yosemite National Park

Absolutely, i agree with you, but there's nothing we or government can do about this problem.
Even Mount Everest is not spared. Better roads and more better accomodation at places like Leh, Lahaul Spiti and Ladakh region is pulling tourists. Moreover, a tunnel is being proposed under Rohtang Pass, this means un-intrrupted traffic (may be civil traffic) throughout the year.
