How do I get to Manali from Chandigarh?

Hi,
I plan to travel from Chandigarh to Manali in the end of June.

1.How and where in Mumbai do I book tickets for the A/C buses that ply from C'garh to Manali?

2.What is the best time to travel (night or day)?

3.How do I get to the bus stand from C'garh airport?

4.How many days in advance do I need to book the bus tickets for Manali?

If anyone has information regarding this trip,I would appreciate their help.

You will get the tickets once you reach here in Chd. there are Volvos from Himachal Tourism plying on this route. they charge around 350 bucks and the bus leaves at around 7 pm in the evening. take an auto or call a taxi - will take u to bus stand.
You will get the tickets on the spot.

Thank you for your help zzzzehar.Someone told me that since this is peak season, it would be risky to bank on getting tickets on the spot.Hence,I was wondering about the advance booking of tickets.

ya dont even dream of getting a ticket on the spot - I've had trouble getting one even 10 days in advance! Take the Himachal Tourism buses only ( tho I doubt they hav a volvo from Chandigarh) as the private operators are a bunch of scoundrels. As for the advance booking - u'll hav to ask a friend in chandigarh to book the tics for u. Maybe some good travel agent in ur city will do it for u - call up & ask a few of them

sabby80, may I please have the honor to know when you were in chd last time? volvo by himachal roadways is here since ages and the private operators too run volvos on alternate days. I am sure the private agents know how to make money...If there is more rush, they will have more buses run on this route than any other.
for which date do you need the tickets for?

Hi Jayanta,
u hav two options & which one u pick depends on how much ur willing to spend & also when u land in Chandigarh.

1. The first option is good if u land in the evening. Catch the HRTC A/C Volvo bus that actually originates from delhi & hence reaches Chandigarh at midnight. They apparently hav some sort of online advance booking - as claimed by a scrolling link on their site - http://himachal.gov.in/hrtc. Heres the timetable for that bus - http://himachal.gov.in/hrtc/rmap.asp?link=3020002. Even though they miraculously depart from Kullu before they arrive!!!!( thats what the timetable says ) the govt. chaps r far better than any private bus - Im telling u that from experience.
Also, sitting up whole night is not a very pleasant experience - however comfy the bus might be.

2. The second option is a good one if u land in Chandigarh in the morning. U can hire an A/C Car/suv for Manali. I did manali to Chandigarh in a good scorpio just last month & it cost me 5,000 bucks. However u cld cut dn on the cost a bit by going non A/c coz most of those guys will switch off A/c during the uphill climb - so at least bargain on that beforehand.
