Wow that is quite an info. More insights into the doubts I had ... So, to summarize --

1) NH-22 and HTR starts at Shimla but not aligned together for majority of the part except the common sections are only Wangtu to Tapri, and Puh (turn-off) to Khab (turn-off).

2) NH-22 ends at Kaurik, so it might be the reason that we find so many signboards of it. I guess, it might be possible that Brits did built it for trading route to Tibet other than old HTR otherwise I am uncertain the need to create it.

I read here
Quote:
Bodh said earlier Chandigarh was a centre of barter trade as people from Tibet used to bring Chinese goods like blankets, flasks, raw wool, herbs and leather products. They used to take back wheat flour, rice, spices, plastic goods, farm implements and livestock.
So that means people used to come from Tibet via Lepcha-Kaurik to Chandigarh (Spiti Valley one) for trade. Which states that there was a connectivity to Tibet fro Kaurik as well.

There is still some connectivity I guess because in the reports mentioned at the link here (Page 3, first para), red sandlwood was being smuggled to China/Tibet from Kaurik/Lepcha regions.

3) HTR, ends at Shipki La at least from Indian side. Uncertain, about its extent into Tibet. It is like Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur-Gaura-Sarahan-Nichar-Wangtu-Tapri-Urni-Roghi-Kalpa-Pangi-Jangi-Labrang-Puh-Khab-Namgya-Shipki La- Shipki Village (Tibet)- and may be beyond

4) There is no old and new HTR. There is only one HTR (hope I am right on this )

---------

But, the WIKI links here and here says that NH22 ends at Khab or may be say Namgia or Shipki La??

Anything I missed??

No, NH 22 starts at Ambala.

I'm guessing a dirt-track to Kaurik existed for a long time. It's entirely possible that the pakka road was built after 1962 to allow travel upto the border out-post. AFAIK there is still a BOP at Kaurik even though the village is missing.

My post #8 was useful, wasn't it?

Well, lots of folks erroneously refer to NH 22 as HTR, so I guess that's where the 'old' and 'new' comes in.

Yes - the fact that wikipedia is not infallible.

Then again, as I explained earlier - legally NH 22 ends "near Shipki La".

Dilliwala, hats off to such commendable knowledge and clearing the doubts to great extent!! I will now keep that in mind. Yes, your post 8 and other posts by Kshil da and others were too helpful in making me understand the differences. I too was in misconception earlier that both of them are almost aligned but now quite a lot of inputs here clearing the doubts.

So, we cannot say that it ends at Kaurik!! It is just another road may be unnamed

I told you that in earlier post, isn't it?

Dilliwala is amazing and can turn the search feature of IM to compete with most complex searching algorithm to find out posts what honestly I, myself forgot.

If you ever in doubt with a HP/UT road, this person would surely be your google or wiki, that's my experience of last 2 years

Need names of peaks from Kalpa to Ki/Kibber/Gette

Dear all,

Last week I was fortunate enough to go to Spiti valley from Bangalore and captured some decent footage in HD. I am trying to make a DVD of it and want to know the peaks I shot along this way. Only peak I am reasonably sure is Manirang seen from Dhankar monastery. Not sure abt the rest. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thx

Shipki la is a prohibitive area for obvious reasons. But it is connect with a very smooth black tarmac.I went towards Shipki la but returned back after covering 7-8 kms on old HTR towards Dogri as I was alone.I did this during my Scooter ride in March 2011.Entire road was devoid of any human soul.It was an eerie feeling riding in Spiti during winter.
