Himachal Tour in May
Greetings...Noobie saying hello =)
I'm planning on trekking in Himachal in early May. Not an avid trekker but fairly fit. Any suggestions for good sightseeing treks? Also, I'd appreciate information on tours leaving delhi. Thanks! |

Hi- Im also in India wanting to travel to Himachal in May- female from California. I like hiking, outdoors, camping, seeing everything! Wish to see the most breathtaking spots and get a real feel for the area and not just the touristy stuff. |

The Chamba-Khajjiar-Dalhousie area of Himachal has plenty of natural beauty and a few trekking routes too. This area is less frequented by tourists, as compared to Kullu-Manali.

There are plenty of option for HP sin summer time, tourist trails in midlands, hippie trails in west, treks are abound almost anywhere you with align your sights. Somehow for non-stress trekking I feel eastern HP under or around 11,000 feet have best options/sights and comparatively tourist free. At least I don’t want to rub shoulders with teeming millions elsewhere in H.P

Ever since hippies and bounders booted off from Californian sunshine (that’s what the slang use to be for LSD those days I guess) discovered Manali in western H.P wherever they went they made a trail rather firmly entrenched in blue smoke, psychedelic and happy go lucky free spirits. However in present times rave parties and few weeks snatched from usual humdrum, getting stoned like no tomorrow represent the new hippies rather then the ideology they believed in and started off with in 60s or 70s.
But H.P is still a trekker’s paradise, away from frantic midlands full of religious millions thronging over Nth number of temples, away from west circuit of hash and neon lights, almost every nook is full of a gentle sundown and molten lava for clouds, every morning sun gently comes up with air crisp and fragrance of pine of lichen even. Personally I don’t try and push myself over the tree-line and now I can’t distinguish much between trekking and lazily drifting. Trekking hasn’t been my cuppa but H.P for me is something you can read here in a post that I rumbled off in one of those moody days. I arrived in Delhi! |

SHIMLA is right about CHAMBA region but most trekking routes in this region are not open and safe for MAY.
All high passes are heavy snowbounded and even in good season-much care has to be taken to negotiate them. This is also a good reason that these trains arte not more in use. Earlies people and shepherds used to cross for ZANSKAR and KASHIMR but now crossing to KASHMIR is NOT SAFE and passes leading to ZANSKAR are very demanding and I WOULD NOT suggest anyone to undertake this. You can trek MACLEOD GANJ to CHAMBA but in MAY it will be requiring ICE AXE and ROPE to cross over INDRA HAR pass !! |

Question about the hippies?
Directed to Hippie at Heart
I am a young traveller looking to broaden my horizons. I am initially drawn to this idea of a hippie trail, but how nouveau are these hippies. Is it an unamicable and demeaning experience...or is it just different to the 60s? |
