I am planning to visit spiti valley in July. I have searched a lot about the bus and came to know that a bus starts from Manali early morning , I guess 5 am.

But I have heard that usually it is full, as it comes from Kullu, and we are six people and don't want to travel standing, being uncomfortable.

anyone who has traveled by this bus ? and want to share their experiences.

Ya, that's what I am worried about. I personally can manage it, but there are five other people also traveling with me, so dont know about them.

I guess in that case the cab is the only option I m left with. Do you have any idea of the tarrif for a taxi till kaza ?

Thank You

Hi Aky,

Did you then take a taxi to Kaza and back? For how many days did you book the taxi and how much it cost you?

Hi Aky and Others,

Did any of you take the bus from Manali to Kaza? Any information on the same will be helpful.
a. Can we reserve seats and board the bus at Manali?
b. I heard it starts at 4:00 AM from Kullu. What time does it leave Manali?
c. What time does it reach Kaza? (I came to know that it used to reach Kaza around 5 PM last July/August). It would be great to know this year's status if someone has traveled this year

Also, if someone has taken the bus from Kaza to Manali, please share the details and experience. Searched everywhere for this part of the info but to no luck :-(

Cheers,
Vinay

a)NO you can not book it (thanks to HRTC for that, otherwise poor local of spiti will never get a seat)
b) dont rememeber the time but better to reach before 5 am
c) yes it takes well 10-11 hours may increase based on road situation
if you get seat it better , not pleasant if you are not used to travel in himachal village roads, road is very irregular and bus will be jerking all the time

I just returned from a trip to Chandertal today, details for the bus are exactly as JINI has said.
Also as a side note: The roads are bad. Yesterday on my return I boarded the bus from Losar at 8.00 AM (and it left Kaza at 5 AM) and reached Manali at 7.00 PM.
Generally you do get seats at Manali. But sometimes the bus gets full and you have to stand the journey. So be prepared or run to Kullu.

Thanks Jini and MountainHorse for the info.

Yes, I have taken local buses in Himachal. But that were on good roads. Shimla to Narkanda, Pathakhot to McLeodGanj and Shimla to Manali. From what I have heard, road from Manali to Kaza is very bad and nowhere comparable.

On the return journey, 5 AM (Kaza) to 7 PM (Manali) - 14 hours is really long. If we take a share taxi, is there a chance that we could reach Manali earlier? And is it easy to get a share taxi from Kaza bus stand/market area?

Cheers,
Vinay

Vinay,

Yes it is possible for you to find a shared taxi, and it will reach a quite early too.
However that depends for example with me what happened was cabs that left Losar around 6 were stuck at Chota Dhara till 1.00 when our bus finally reached and the locals helped clear the mess.

Also note that since last 2 years the road from Gramphoo - Losar is under GREF (earlier it was PWD) and what the locals and drivers say is that it has become very bad.
If you are a single traveller then :
1) Take the bus to Manali
2) Hitch a ride with either a cab or Truck towards Gramphoo (and take a bus from there) [I have hitched rides in Kaza region and truckers are good people]

If you are 2-3 travellers then I am sure you can talk to some other tourists at the stand and fix a taxi while sharing the costs.

Hope this helps.
Regards
Aditya

Thanks , it was a dead thread, you again give it life. It was started by me for gaining info for my last year trip.

a I never took a bus from Manali to Kaza. It's a ordinary bus so i dont think you can reserve a seat early. You might get a seat from Manali if you are lucky.

b.The bus starts at around 5am from Manali .

c. you heard it right, its a 11-12 hrs journey ,and bus reaches Kaza around 5pm.

Do consider visiting chandertal on the way to Kaza , but for that you have to stay for a night at camp or in Batal if you are going by bus.

Vinay
Yeah definitely a taxi will take somewhat less time. Sometimes jams at rohtang consume much of the time in the journey , its a 212 km journey on some of the worst roads so it would definitely take 10-11 hrs

I traveled this route last july. Me and a friend went from Manali - Batal/Kunzum - Chandratal (trekking from Kunzum) - Back to Batal - Kaza

WHen you reach Manali, go to the bus stand and ask at one of the counters "Boss, yaha se Kaza ki bus kitne baje niklegi subah ko". They told us "Sabere
5 baje". So we reached the bus stand at 4.30. The bus arrived around 5.15 i think.
It was packed, I stood till ROhtang pass (8 am i think), my friend sat on his own bags like many other people.
Rates- On average HRTC buses charge you Rs.1.1 per km (approx), we got off at Kunzum pass and that cost us Rs 142 per person.
Apart from the altitude sickness we both experienced, the bus ride is rough but great fun. Wish i wasnt feeling sick. P.S. Dont eat greasy food the night before you travel, also get good sleep and avoid alcohol (all these rules i breached).
Reaching time- Our bus reached us to Kunzum at 1 pm . Kaza should be another 4 hours away. So yea, 5pm approx for Kaza.
I suggest rather not go to Kaza, stopover at Batal and explore the surrounding area, spend one night at Chandra Dhaba, owners named Chacha Chachi are awesome people lol. Bed will cost u like 50-100 bucks. You can hitchhike to Chandrataal lake from Batal itself. OR go Kunzum and trek it (but its not as easy as the locals there say it is).

If you want more smaller details about the manali-kaza route, you can find it on my friends blog HERE

Thanks all for the information.

Marks, it is a very informative blog on the route. I am sure many will find it useful.

I would have loved to do a stopover at Batal, but looks doubtful giving the duration of my trip. I will be going there during the coming long weekends in August. I will update with the details when I am back.

Once again I thank the Indiamike community for the wealth of information :-)

Cheers,
Vinay

There was one agency in Manali, he gave us rates of around Rs 4.5k or Rs. 3.5k till Chandrataal (dont remember). But it costs somewhere in that region. Add maybe another thousand or two. I would guess it will be around 5000 to 6000
