Question GPS Track - Shimla –Kinnaur – Spiti – Manali

Hi All,

I'm planning to do a bicycle trip from Shimla –Kinnaur – Spiti to Manali starting from 27 September.

I wonder if anyone who did such trip made a GPS track?
If you have it, please do share

Another question, what temperatures I should expect this time of year on the higher parts of the trip? Any snow?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Danny
I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us...very hard to explain why you're mad, even if you're not mad

Danny:

I might be able to get you the GPS tracks for part of your route by 27th Sept; to the extent your route coincides with my GHiRT-2 planned to end on 27th Sept. We will be recording our entire route on a Garmin-GPS.

You might be able to get it earlier here or maybe if you search or ask in these two other popular India Road Tour sites: BCM and Team-BHP

PS: Will also check with a roadie (HV Kumar) if has this data in his road route data bank

PS1: See here if you get what you want ... i did see see Shimla-LEH GPS-Track here.

I have GPS points for part of the route - Shimla-Rampur-Jeori-Spello and Manali-Rohtang-Gramphoo-Kunzum la-Losar-Kaza. However, I am unsure how intelligible it is since I have not edited the info properly. IN any case, I am on that cicuit on Sep 23-27 and can share it with at that time!

Can share it with you. Please let me have your email id.

Hi Danny,

I did not use GPS but I have noted coordinates of points on the Kinnaur-Spiti-Lahaul route according to Google Earth. If it is of any help for you, you can find them in my report on http://meczko.blog.onet.pl/

Hi meczko,

Thanks for the information.
Although the coordinates not much help to me you great report IS!
I plan to print out all the relevant information from it. It appears to me that there is ALOT of important and useful information.
I found the external links you give useful as well.

I'm sure your page will be very helpful to everyone who makes this circle!

Thank you so much,
Danny

Hi Danny,

I've noticed you also asked for weather conditions. AFAIK it may be a problem in Sept/Oct - last year some people got stuck for days in Spiti because of snowfall in early September. My advice would be to follow the Himachal part of 'The Tribune' website (http://www.tribuneindia.com/) for the next couple of weeks - they report weather-caused transport issues - and to have some 'plan B' to visit some lower regions of Himachal in the case you can't reach Spiti.

Have fun!

I'm thinking maybe it'd be a better to do the circle from Manali-Spiti-Shimla , this way I'll pass Rohtang 29 or 30 in September and not 12 in October.

Do you think the weather would be better? Or chances for getting stuck are the same?

I am not familiar with conditions at that time of the year but I think that's impossible to predict in a couple of weeks' advance. Perhaps other more experienced posters can tell more on your chances? In any case starting from Manali, when Rohtang is blocked, you are blocked at the very beginning. Starting from Shimla is safer, as you can at least explore some Kinnaur and in case of trouble backtrack from there or from Spiti. You can look for the Deepak Sanan & Dhanu Swadi's book "Exploring Kinnaur and Spiti" (on Google Books) for some ideas on places to visit in Kinnaur in case you can't go any further.

If you are pressed to do the whole round-trip, I think you should be flexible, follow the conditions closely and decide on your starting point just shortly before. If there is stable weather, Rohtang and Kunzum La are open and the forecast for the next few days is favourable, maybe you can assume in a reasonably safe way that it will be possible to cross Rohtang and Kunzum in a couple of next days? However, that's just my vague idea, not supported by any experience...

I posted an answer a couple of days ago but it doesn't seem to appear on the forum. Just to say that I cycled this road last summer, and although we didn't have a GPS, I took notes of the altitudes and distances using a cycle computer. You can have a look at the notes on our blog : http://himalayavelo.blogspot.com, it's in French, but a google translation will do the job for helping you understanding the technical stuff. I hope my message gets thru this time. Feel free to ask if you need any information.

I agree with the above remark : it's definitely a better idea to start with Rothang and Kunzum as they are more likely to be blocked by snow the later you go.

Enjoy your trip !

dear dunne,
due to sensitive area(related to Boarder(china)), GPS treak is not possible.
it's better to find the geo map.

You're a mine of information. I took a look at the book and it looks very good. Gonna read as much as I can there and buy myself a copy in india...
As for wheather, I think I'll check it before I take plane , and decide what i gonna do.

What do you mean not possible? If I take my GPS , make a track and then post it? It's not something secret, you can see the area on google maps...

Please take a look at my other thread, I'm thinking of changing the route "a bit"
I'll appreciate any feedback..

Manali - Spiti - Rishikesh on bicycle in 20 days. Possible?
