Hi Arnold,
I went on a motorbike trip from Chandigarh to Kaza(district HQ Spiti) a couple of years ago. The trip was marvelous. And I'm sure you'll have a great one too.
The road is good upto Sumdo as that's the point where the nation highway ends. There onwards it's the state highway. It's not great but still manageable.
Don't forget to stop over at Sarahan(district Rampur), Kalpa (Chini village), Chitkul (Sangla), Nako, Chango, Tabo (1000 years old Budhist monastery), Dankhar monastery, Ki monastery and Khibber village.
Try to get a room at the Public Works Department (PWD) or Forest Department rest houses. Although you need a reservation to stay there, but as most of them have vacant rooms the manager will probably let you in. They are cheap and well maintained.
You can go on numerous treks in the region, and see some wildlife like snow leopards and blue sheep (Pin Valley National Park).
But before leaving Delhi or Shimla make sure to ask the HPTDC (http://www.hptdc.nic.in) about an inner line permit. I'm not sure if foreign tourists still need to get one before entering Spiti but it's always good to find out before leaving.
I can't think of anything that I didn't like during the trip. And I hope you'll have the same to say once you're back.
Have great trip. Cheers!

on the permit front : You still need a permit as of last year. If you are entering Spiti from the south, then it is very convenient to get a permit from Recong Peo. You need spare passport photos, photocopies of your passport and visa pages, and a day to kill.

Are you going on an enfield? If so, the last good mechanic outside of shimla/manali is in Recong Peo, be sure that your bike is in good condition before leaving here. Take extra fuel, so you can do a side trip to the Pin valley (I wish I had!).

Enjoy!
