From Delhi to Leh: Kinnaur, Spiti, etc or not?

Hello,
in a week we'll leave to Delhi, then we'll lead north till Leh by train/bus/car etc....(in total we have about 3 weeks)
Firt step will be Shimla, then we have two chances:
1) make a (supposed hard) tour to Sarahan - Kalpa- Tabo - Kaza - Manali and then to Leh
2) go directly to Manali and Leh and stay more in Ladakh
We are in doubt both for the time needed for option 1 and also for the weather - sholud we expect for rain, rain and rain? And what about road conditions?
Any info will be really appreciated!
Thanks in advance
Fabio

Hi Fabio and welcome to the forum!

The Sarahan to Manali route via Kaza has been closed due to heavy flooding, landslides, and bridges being swept away.

I think the road is still closed but our member dhananjay in Shimla has been posting on this board about road conditions in Himachal Pradesh. Suggest you PM him for latest reports.

Last I heard the Delhi - Manali - Leh route was open.

The monsoon can last into August but your chances of a trouble free trip are improving.

I´m thinking of the same route, in September.

About the roads :

Harish Kapadias book says Kafnu-Sangam is a seven day trek :

Kafnu-Mulling 15 km , 2100-3280m

Mulling-Kara, 6 km 3560 m

Kara-Phustirang 6 km 4200m

From Phustirang a steep ascent to the Bhaba Pass at 4865m , then it´s all downhill.

I would expect the first day (mostly from the altitude adaption) and going over the pass being the hardest parts. The stay in Shimla is certainly a good start.

Hi

Hi,
The good news is people have started getting to Sangla from Shimla .. however the road is only open till tapri ... then a walk for 3 kms and a private car to just before Karchamm ... then a walk again and a car againn to sangla ... To get to Kalpa either walk along the highway or do the two day walk via URNI and Roghi to Kalpa .. great taxing walk ... Also the army has started working on the old hindustan Tibet road because of its high elevation ... The stretches are OK in some places and a part of the road from Tapri to Urni has been declared fit for small vehicles ... but this is only for a short distance .... My suggestion anyone looking forward to do Spiti via Kinnaur should not contemplate before September third week .. that is the tentative time when the road would be absolutely right ... There is a possiblity that it might be fine before that ... but then thats a possiblity .. i would also suggest doing the PIn Bhabha trek which is agreat way of getting to Spiti from Kinnaur ... In all you lose only two days ... Just imagine the whole walk till Mudh from Kafnu is roughly 70 kms .. and if you take a bus then you do roughly 250kms ... which is funny .. However Kinnaur is one the best places in Himachal and being there is an experience .. Dont let the weather and the road conditions bog you down ... enjoy the adventure ... Its got great recall value ...

Happy travels to all ..

Dhananjay

Guys- DELHI-LEH is fine now. Sangla valley is still remote-yes, dhananjay is right but avoid landing at TAPRI in evenings and night.
