I think the rate for Ross Common is incorrect. I think the maximum they charge in peak season is RS1500. I went in October 2004 and they quoted me a rate of about RS1,000. The room they offered smelt of damp so I declined and went to Alasia, I got a bigger room for RS1500. The Alasia really is crying out for a bit of painting and decorating. It is rather sad seeing such a place being left to basically rot.

I have stayed at the Ross Common in the past and the food is very good quality and value for money.

The Dhaba near the shops is very poor. The dal tasted as if it was a few days old. After my first piece of roti I quickly left the place and got some pasty type things from the small kiosk run by the old Sikh man.

Not sure if the following site is still kept up to date but it has hotel rates

HPTDC Hotel Booking

I just checked Ross Common Rooms are Priced between 1150 & 1600.
I stayed in the Anexxe and the double room there was really big and good. The Bathroom was as big as my bedroom in delhi.

Prices of any HPTDC hotel can be found at
http://hptdc.nic.in/custsw/viewuser8.asp
You can evan book Online...

Adding to the list of favorite places, I would like to add mine and it most definitely has to be Khajjiar. Nothing much to see or do there but the place is absolutely gorgeous.
Hotel Mini Swiss is one of the, if not the only, best option there..

Hi Dhananjay,
Nice to se you back.
I agree with you, the Forest Guest Houses are the best places to stay, and great Value for Money.
How does one go about booking a room in the Forest Guest House ?
Can anybody book a FGH or do we need to know somebody in Himachal Govt to book a FGH ??

Hi

Hi,

All rest houses in the state welcome travelers ... Though it is a bit contradictory the rates for Indians are Rs 150/- a night and for foreigners it is 1000/- a night which is steep .. however a lil bargaining with the chowkidar can get you a room for as low as 200 at times ... It is advisable to go with a prior booking ... you never know which government official might drop in anytime ... you can go to the Himachal Governments opfficial website and go the forests department site from there ... it would be possible to book in advance from there ... The forest Deppt has formulated a new eco tourism policy which is implementing promoting these rest houses in a big way and is developing long term activity plan for these ..

Cheers,
Dhananjay

McLeod Ganj- a small, relaxed almost tout-free community.
Sharma's cottage- Rs 200^^, clean rooms with hot water with a million $ view of the Himalayas from your own private balcony.
