Lightbulb fagu-sangla-kaza-manali Innova vs Tavera?

Hi people,

I just joined the forum. Me and some other friends are planning an 11 day road trip from delhi...

0 Delhi
1 Fagu
2 Sarahan
3 Sangla
4 Sangla
5 Kalpa
6 Tabo
7 Kaza
8 Kaza
9 Manali
10 Manali

We have hired an innova for the trip...
A guy in HP tourism told me that from fagu to kaza... innova is not a very good vehicle and we should go in Tavera or Qualis instead... he said because of low clearance, our driver will ask us to get down quite often...

appreciate your suggestions about the vehicle issue and general commenst about some treks on the route...

We are going with a driver who has supposedly been there before but I am not sure... handling is not my main concern...

my main concern is that innova has very low clearance.. it shoudlnt be that we are not able to take it around with ease... or have to get down after every km...
i liek the walks... but if it is too frequent then it might become difficult to stay on schedule...

Innova is an upgrade of Qualis..and both are from Toyota's stable..

if if you are less than 7 passengers then there should be no issue on which car to choose..I would gladly take Chevorlet Tavera over Qualis..

the low clearance means that you have to get down if the road is bad i.e. the road has been partly washed away or has uncleared debris from a landslide - these are not every KM , but more likely every 2 hours of travel time.

I just came back from Spiti and from Losar to gramphoo innova had a very tough time to to dirt track full of rocks and boulders and strams crossing the road.Qualis ,scorpio and bolero are the best options there.

vehicle choice for similar route?

my route in late sept. to early october is simla-sarahan-sangla-tabo-kaza-possibly chandratal-manali, as 2 passengers and a driver.

local tour op said to me, "Qualis/ Innova are most readily and best vehicles available for travel in this region," making no distinction between the two. and although i asked about upgrade to even better vehicles, he said nothing.

are there any desirable upgrades, provided that we are prepared the increase in price for the 9-day jeep safari?

thanks.

The Scorpio has the most powerful engine - 2.6 lt. Next is the Bolero - 2.5 lt. These are Mahindra vehicles which traditionally have high clearance - basically jeeps, very comfortable. But the Qualis shud not have a prob. Ask for all these rates.

jontysfool,
U haven't mentioned travel dates. If u are going soon it's not a good idea anyway - u will have heard the Rampur valley is flooded and the road has broken away at a few places. In October, an Innova shud not have a problem upto Kaza. Re Losar/Gramphu there is a thread somewhere about someone doing the trip in a Santro or similar.

Good point - a clear indicator of badly maintained diesel vehicles. Do u know if the Qualis was petrol or diesel? Petrol wud smoke less - diesel engines always smoke more under strain even when optimally maintained. I get my Bolero maintained like clock-work and it's in excellent condition for its age (over a lakh km!) but a few pumps on the 'race' will cough up smoke, though nothing like what u describe!
