Driving from Kaza to Manali
i plan to drive a bike or a gypsy 4x4 and do the Baspa valley and the Spiti valley sometime in October. will be with 3- 4 others or a group of 12-15 bikes. I am trying to understand 2 main things.
1. when does the pass close each year? Will we make it over or get stuck in snow at Rangrik and points north west.
2. can bikes/4x4 make it up to chandertal? to the lake side or at least nearby.
3. is that pass called Kunzum la? I forget.

I am planning to do Kinnaur-Spiti-Lahaul circuit from Shimla in my FIAT Linea in the first and second weeks of October 2012 and to drive from Kaza to Manali via Kunzum Pass, Gramphoo and Rohtang Pass, if possible; otherwise, I intend to come back via Shimla again. Kindly advise me about the possibilities of driving from Kaza to Manali in October 2012.

Difficult to predict the closure of Kunzum and Rohtang pass now. Your drive will be possible if both the passes are open.
