Manali is 570 kms. from Delhi. A deluxe bus takes approx. 16 hours to cove the distance, a taxi may take a couple of hours less. If you use a rented taxi, you'll be charged by the km. both ways, irrespective of whether you return to Delhi by the same vehicle.

You may contact the Govt. of India Tourist Office at Janpath, New Delhi, for help in car hire.

Don't pick just any taxi. There is a crime and safety issue. You can also get it through the auspices of your hotel or travel agencies. I prefer the former..

yes indeed

once i have my auto for hire....can i make it to manali in one day from Delhi if i leave at early enuf......this will be my second trip into the region the first time we had an auto but there where problems with fuel...it took ages to fuel up in Chandrigargh so it took 2 days to get to Kullu...coming back the driver stopped in Chandrigargh for the afternoon...we thought it was fuel issue...I think it was more like timing the driver stopped to pick up a relative the next day...so she could get a ride to Delhi! oh well that was expected...
Can Manili - Delhi be done in one days drive (being more downhill than uphill)???

Yes, you can make it from Delhi to Manali in one day (and vice versa). It's an exhausting 12-14 hours. As stated above, car hire can be arranged through many sources. I'd be interested to know where you got the car previously that jerked you around so thoroughly. Taking ages to fuel up in Chandigarh sounds fishy, but an extra overnight to accommodate the driver's family's schedule (!) is outrageous.

Oh, and if uphill or downhill slope makes a signifigant difference in the length of the journey, you're travelling in the wrong kind of car.

Not only do you have to think about driver fatigue, but also about the risks of driving in the dark! This is something to be avoided in India, IMHO, and it's REALLY to be avoided with a driver who's tired!

Why the big push to get there in one 16-hour stint? Don't you want to be able to enjoy seeing the countryside on the way?

If you're thinking of doing this because your schedule is tight, I would recommend changing your destination. Based on my personal experience of both, a typical 12-hour drive in North America won't even prepare you for a typical two hour drive in India!!!

Definitely it is possible. I did Gurgaon-Delhi-Manali-Kothi (600+ Kms) in 12 hrs on my bike 2 dayz ago and returned today. The roads are in very good condition. There should be no trouble.
