Will be travelling by bus to Bir via Dharamsala on March 12th

Hi guys, if I will get a visa, I will be travelling from Delhi to Bir via Dharamsala or Mandi(if I will not find direct bus from Delhi to Bir) on March 12th. Will need a good companion. If somebody is going to Dharamsala or to Bir on March 12th, maybe we can go there together, then we will proceed our separate ways
Thanks!

Direct bus from Delhi to Bir?

Dear friends, someone told me that the bus Delhi-Manali stops at Bir or somewhere close to Bir, is that true?
Also I've heard that the bus Delhi-Mandi could stop at Bir, if I told the driver I was going there, is that true?

I am looking for the most direct way to get to Bir (Kangra district) from Delhi, without going to Dharamsala or to Pathankot first.

Is there any direct bus from Delhi to Bir? Please help! Thank you so much!

You need to take a bus to Mandi station, then swap buses for any bus heading down the Kangra valley towards Dharamsala, Pathankot,Palampur,Kangra etc, just ask for Bir at the station & someone will put you on the right bus. Buses going in that direction leave every 20mins or so. Also consider spending 1 night in Mandi, stay at the Raj Mahal Hotel & take a walk along the river to see all the old temples, it's wonderful!! Thank you very much! Will the Delhi-Manali bus work?
Actually I just realized that I am going to Chauntra.

If I will get a visa, which I cannot say for sure, as here they don't give the visas in advance, but if I will get the visa, I will be going to Chauntra. I will be landing on March 12th, and I will have to be at Chauntra on 13th, as on 14th the teachings will start. So, I will have to go as directly there as possible, I think.

If you take a bus from Mandi to Dharamsala and tell the ticket conductor that you want to go to Bir/Billing, on the highway he will flag a local (Bir) bus coming from the other direction.

Bir/ Billing is a dead end road wise - none of the major servces can go there.

Thank you! Where do the buses from Delhi to Mandi take off? I could not find any like Volvo kind of bus going to Mandi on the Internet.. Maybe will be ok to take a taxi from Mandi to Bir or to Chauntra? How much time would it take and how much would it cost?
Thank you very much for your help, guys!

This is much closer to Jogindernagar & Mandi than D'sala, so yes take the Manali bus & change at Mandi. Here's how.

Manali - Getting there!

If you are into Buddhism then it's worth making a quick visit to Rewalsar Lake, it's 1hr from Mandi. KK

I have a suggestion.
If you have the time, why not make this a train trip?
Take one of the several trains from Delhi to Pathankot.
From there to Jogindernagar is a terrific journey on the toy train through Kangra valley.

Thank you very much! You know I am going there alone with a huge backpack, so the aim is just to get there fast, then I will do some sightseeing when the time will allow. If I cannot book the Delhi-Manali bus in advance, which one is better to take and from where - like what to say to the taxi driver and how to find the bus there in Delhi?

Thank you very much!

If you arrive late in Bir, the stopover possibilities are quite poor. If you are going for Tamsar treck, go straight ahead for approx. 1 hour and there is a small camp place. No luxyry but better than spending the night at the bus stop in Bir.

Well, I guess I will go the traditional way - from Delhi to Dharamsala and from there will take taxi to Bir.
Then I will have to go to Chauntra. I should call my friends who are also going there, maybe they will be able to meet me somewhere at some point
I will get there ok, thanks very much!

Delhi to Mandi, Mandi to Bir is the shorter route and faster bus journeys. You CAN do it via D'shala but its the longer route.

Thank you very much! I am thinking I should take this route too. I will try to contact the travel agent of the monastery I am going to, tomorrow. The thing is I have no credit cards, no debit cards, no domestic passport to get those new cards, as my domestic passport was stolen here, in Moscow. So, I cannot purchase the bus tickets online. And I am not sure from where in Delhi to take the Manali bus, and if there will be any tickets available.
Then in Mandi I will have to take the Indian bus with people sitting on the roof, etc? Perhaps. I am not a big fan of such buses though. Oh, well..

Manali buses, [including the Aircon Volvo] leave from Kashmere Gate ISBT in Delhi.

Mandi to Bir can be done in a taxi if you don't like crowded buses. Take a bus where a seat is available.
