Dharamsala to Keylong bus?

Hi,

Is it possible to travel by local bus from dharamsala to keylong? I'm looking to make this journey without having to go through Manali. Even if the journey is long and needs to be done in segments, I'd still be interested.

Any ideas?

Thanks

WHY??? All the buses from D'sala would have to go through Manali anyway. I'm fairly sure you will have to change buses at Manali there won't be any direct from D'sala. KK

voyager, you forgot Chamba-Kilar-Udaypur route, it'll be shorter.

I'm not familiar with those places. It's possible to take the bus (or buses) through there to Keylong?

Basically I have no time constraints and have already seen Manali and surrounding area, so I would prefere to take a different route if possible.

Thanks

WARNING: Anyone not familiar with the geography of HP and J&K please ignore posts 3 and 4!!

Uh oh, lansell, seems you took them a bit seriously despite the emoticons! But as kk already said earlier, Dhasa to Keylang buses have to go thru Manali, no choice. voyager then came up with the longest possible route, albeit avoiding Manali, as you desired! The route I mentioned is shorter than thru Ladakh and avoids Manali too, but there are very bad sections involved.
BUT, if you want to travel some and see something new, that wud actually be a fantastic route to take, you'll get to see some wild, unspoilt countryside, specially between Tisa and Kilar, crossing the 4390 metre-high Sach pass in-between on a narrow unmetalled road! The full route is Chamba-Tisa-Sach pass-Kilar-Udaypur-Tandi Bridge-from here one road to Keylang, one to Rohtang La/Manali. Kilar to Udaypur is 45 km on an unmetalled road, but buses go that way to Keylang and Manali (or one from Kilar and the other from Udaypur, I forget). From Kilar to Tandi Bridge (90 km) the drive is along the Chandrabhaga river, again unspoilt countryside with pretty little villages every now and then.

You wud have to find your way from Dhasa to Chamba first, which is quite easily done. Only issue is how to get over the Sach pass - a) it's almost never passable before end-June, and b) depends on whether HRTC buses are running on that route or not, a service was supposed to have started 2 years ago. It's best that you check this before leaving Dhasa, altho authentic info may only be available from HRTC Chamba.
There are reports though that share-jeeps go over the Sach pass, so you may be able to get a ride in one.

Hi! What about going via Kinnaur and Spiti?

Thanks for the detailed reply, I'll definately look into that route, sounds exciting.

I'd happily go through Kinnuar and Spiti, but I've just arrived in Kullu from those areas, so I don't want to retrace my steps. It's partly my motivation for not going over the Rohtang pass route.

Thanks to all!
