Hello,
My first message on this forum ! I am so glad I found it because it is full of information. I am actually preparing my trip to India and Nepal.
First, it will be Delhi-Dharamsala and i guess the bus (found all the information here will be the best.
1 week in Dharamsala but also Bir as I am going there to visit a Tibetan child I am sponsoring.
Anybody knows if there is a bus to Bir (daily) or a good driver to hire? we are 4 people !
Thanking you in advance,
Val

Bir is a small settlement so transport options will be limited - dont know if there is a direct bus from Dharamsala (quite possible). What you can do is get a trunk bus going to Mandi and ask the conductor to drop you at the Bir turnoff. You can walk - 4km (uphill though) - hitch, or wait for bus or taxi.

Sometimes the conductor will flag down the Bir service (if you come across it) and transfer you.

The Tibetan district is removed from the main street where the post office is - its further down the hill from memory - ask for directions - maybe someone will give you a lift. Bir is one of the most scenic locations I've visited - you will love it. There have been scandals where monks have conned tourists out of money - keep yer hand on yer wallet.

I think there's a bus, but it's also actually pretty cheap to hire a car and driver in Dharamsala, especially if four of you are sharing. I did that a couple of years ago when I went to Bir to visit the mother of a friend of mine, to drop off a bunch of gifts she had me schlep over there for her family.

TIme

On a related topic.
How long does it take to get from Kangra/Dharamsala to Bir. Iam going there today to paraglide and I only have 4 days, then I gotta be back at work. Overnight bus from DehraDun. I was wondering if it might be shorter to go to Mandi then up to Bir, if one wasn't needing to go to Dharamsla?
Sorry if I hijacked your thread.

Driving time from McLeod Ganj to Bir was a couple of hours if I recall correctly. That was with a car and driver, not by bus.

Yes - bus from Mandi, when you buy your ticket make it clear you are going to Bir and onboard tell the conductor where you are going - he will flag the Bir service and transfer you. This is how I did it.

The pgliders congregate in a guest house in the Tibetan area (forget the name)and travel each day to Billing.

Hi there,

the best way from dharamshala to Bir for the 4 of you, will be a taxi... you can hire a taxi from Dshala bus stand, BIR is about 60 kms from dshala and it approx. takes around 2-3 hrs. You can also take a bus... but that wont be comfortable and also the bus timing might not suit you. taxi might cost around under Rs. 1500 approx. if you can specify your dates/timing, i might be able to advice some specific taxi service guy to you...

cheers,

MonkJoel

Thank you

Monkjoel, yes if you have any "plan" give me a shout? i am interested !
Taxi might be the best as you said ! i don't think I will be staying in Bir, not sure there is a lot to do? what do you think? but it will be probably cheaper than Dharamsala !
Any thought?

Thanks so much ! and no problem for the highjacking !

Hi Val,

i'm currently in dshala (i stay here) but will be leaving for delhi on 26th... shall be back in a week's time. In Bir, there are not very many places to stay and nothing to do except vising 2 monasteries and doing para gliding (you got to check out the season dates for this). For staying, dshala and mcleod ganj are good options, with a lot of hotels, guest houses and restaurants, besides that there are nice treks and the famous monastry where dalai lama lives...

if you can specify your dates, i can see if i'm personally available to share a cup of coffee and give a tour of the area...

BTW, do you have anything specific in BIR to attend???

cheers,

Monk Joel

Bir

Hi Monkjoel and thank you for your reply ! always great !
We will be in Dharamsala for July 16th (have to check it again) for about a week. We are planing to stay in a monastery and I have to send of fax. Can't remember the name of it right now but saw it here, actually maybe one of your post actually.
Why Bir? I am sponsoring a Tibetan child in exile and he is base in the school in Bir. This is why I want to go over there !

About trekking? is there a lot to do around? 2 friends would love to do this !
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Val
