Question Dharamsala in Oct, Safe for women?

Hi guys..

Me and this friend of mine are planning to go to Dharamsala in Oct, and I have a bunch of questions, please help me out!

How is the weather that time?

For staying, someone suggested the Green hotel to me, is it good? I'm mostly looking at something under a grand which is clean, has hot water, and a beautiful view from the balcony.

We both like to smoke and would like to explore the place, I just wanted to know if it's a safe place for 2 women to roam around.. is there anything happening at night? And where is the Shiva Cafe?

Please suggest any place I must visit, a cafe, food place anything. I'm going to be there for 2 days, and primarily near Bhagsu so any help in that area will be so good!

Also, for a really dumb reason, we would have to take a bus from Delhi to Chandigarh and then to Dharamsala. Is it easy to get a bus from Chandigarh in the middle of the night? And how much time would it take to reach Dharamsala from Chandigarh.

And where to these Himachal buses drop you? In mcleod main market?

I know it's a mad barrage of questions but please help! Thanks so much..

1. Weather will be Cold.

2. Green Hotel will serve the purpose....

3. Yes ! It's safe, just take normal precautions.....

4. Shiva Cafe is near the waterfall at Bhagsu

5. Triund Trek is nice option...

6. Some good cafes are: Khana Nirvana, Jimmy's Italian Kitchen, McLLo, Tashi Delek

7.No idea about bus from Chandigarh at that time !

If you get one for Mcleodganj, then yes mainmarket, else they will take you to Dharamshala, from where you;ll have to take taxi/bus/ share taxi to reach Mcleodganj.

There is a Delhi - Dharamasala TATA A/c bus leaving at 20:15 from Delhi which would reach Chandigarh around 01:30.

I do not know if you could book those tickets from Chandigarh. These tickets can be booked online by www.hp.gov.in/hrtctickets/
There are only 10 tickets that can be booked online.

I guess you could book the tickets from Delhi - Dharamasala and inform that you would be boarding from Chandigarh something similar to what is done in trains. Not sure whether this could be done. You would have to confirm with HRTC.

There are direct buses from Delhi to McLeod/Dharamsala , starts around 6-7 pm , arrive around 12 hours later. Starts from Manju ka Tilla , then swings by ... Connaught , methinks.

Hey, you can find good hotel yourself there, Although it is safe for women but you should be careful, in dark. Direct Buses go from Delhi ( ISBT) to Dharmasla, Last time i gone by train and back by Volvo Bus (Dharshala to Delhi)

thanks

Hi Bodhisattva,
Are you planning to attend Dalai Lama's talks in October? I'm looking for other female companions to go with from Delhi. I don't a have a place booked yet but am hoping to find something with someone else.

I don't agree with delhiwala's statement that it will be cold in October. The last time I was in Dharamsala, it was late October-early November and it was perfect tee-shirt weather. It might get a little cool in the evening, but an ordinary fleece jacket should be more than adequate. And if you find you want something warmer, there are lots of inexpensive jackets and sweaters for sale in McLeod Ganj.

As for a place to stay, do you want to be in Bhagsu or McLeod Ganj? It's not clear. If in McLeod Ganj, then Pema Thang Guest House is nice, but it might be pushing up against (or over) your 1000 rupee budget. It's very pleasant, though, and centrally located in McLG, with views over the valley and an on-site restaurant.

McLeod Ganj is generally safe, but be careful walking around outside the center of town after dark as muggings are not unheard of.

Agree with dzibead here. Look at the weather right now _ it´s still daytime temperatures above twenty degrees in Leh , and above the freezing point at night. A lot warmer nights down in McLeod.

Of course, a Swede and an American might have a different idea of what's "cold" from a delhiwala.

I thought that was a fairly objective fact - of course it´s warm as long as you have water running over the ground (which of course was a bit tongue in cheek to start with , it´s +1 degree now , projected to below zero within the next days )
