Dharamsala+2 weeks
I have 2 weeks and plan to fly up to Dharamsala stay at least 4 days there but where else would be good to go to. I want to stay in places with gardens and/or close to forests to go birdwatching. I am not new to India but new to this bit. Would it be more fun to get a driver and drive up to D? Oh, end of April early May. Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

I haven't been to this area since the early 70's so I can't offer much info on places to stay but since you're interested in seeing birds, a general comment. You will see the largest number of species if you can plan to stop at different altitudes. Lowland jungles at the base of the Himalayas (1000-2000ft) have probably the biggest diversity of species and as you move up things change, so a stop at this level would be good. Palampur, with its tea gardens should also be interesting and higher up, McLeodganj. From there if you climbed up another 1000-3000 ft you would have covered a wide habitat range. |

There's a bird sanctuary in Bharatpur which is supposedly fabulous for birdwatchers. I've been but just mucked around on bikes there instead - the birds were pretty similar to the ones at home as far as I could tell?
