Detailed city maps of Shimla and Manali

If any one has detailed map of shimla and manali from HPTDC or any other source...please scan and post them..tx

i have searched the forum for similar threads but found only online maps from mapmyindia or similar sites...but none of them provide all the tourist spots and neither of them are big enough to view clearly..so if someone could do the needful..it would be highly appreciated..tx

What does the copyright policy state exactly, scanning from sources such as books etc and posting them here is not allowed?

Of course not. Distribution of copyrighted material is just governed by any of the concerned nation's laws (in layman's terms: It is not normally allowed.)

Scanning and posting copyrighted maps clearly falls under this, as anyone could think of for themselves.

Kindly note it is not your issue with the site policies that is at stake. It is that of any site with the powers that govern it.

Short excerpts are normally OK (variously defined in various nations, sometimes to very short); beyond that, one needs to exercise common sense -- or to consult a lawyer.

Nope. Of course, if the material is available on the web, a few lines of the material with a link to the site in question is fine.

right , but if reasonable credit and mention is given to the source/author then why not?....quoting/citing information from off-line or online mediums is common as long as the appropriate source/author is cited...

Yes; but copying the full material is not.

I.e., a hyperlink with a short intro or excerpt is fine. Indiscriminately distributing copyrighted material is not.

This is not allowed off-line either, btw, and again there are laws differing per your location to govern this.

It normally boils down to something like one can give a short excerpt with the link to a source provided one quotes the sources. The length of the quote is then strictly governed. This came to a head (and is still unresolved I think, but I do know it seems to be getting stricter all the time) in the area of audio sampling.

True, I can, for example, quote from Shakespeare "One may smile, and smile, and be a villain" and be ok, because I gave the guy credit.

But if I was to scan Hamlet and post it here, that may be a bit much

Thanks Cap'n and Mach for the clarity....it so happens im meeting a lawyer for dinner tonight...will chew his head of this as well...

I know location has a lot to do with it, esp when the internet comes in and there's a lot of grey area as one keeps reading about with regard to torrents/file sharing/P2P etc...location of the servers and so on..!

Nah, with locations I meant more the country you're in, and the country in which whatever server you're posting your material on is in, really.

It's much less about where you choose to do so from. But those two will determine your options so to speak.

Most places I know of it would be a) unlikely someone would sue you for some minor copyright infringement, but b) it cannot be ruled out.

It follows that c) it's not very nice to leave some forum to face the consequences, and besides d) it's not very nice to steal someone else's material anyway.

Leave a link, a short hint, an excerpt. That's what is called Netiquette. People like to get referenced (and that's what all this public-ness is all about). Not plagiarized.

Hamlet's fine, Capt. Been out of copyright for several hundred years. But you'll have to type it; scanning won't do. Why? Because the play may out of copyright, but the printed book in your hand probably isn't.

This is not a matter for long drawn-out discussion of the law. It is an interesting subject, but let those who wish to discuss it go to a legal forum!

The site rules say this:

It won't be long before Google Maps, Yahoo, Map-my-India, etc etc make this conversation completely redundant, so far as maps is concerned. Even Google Earth and Wikimapia can be very useful for the yet-un-street-mapped parts.

(There is a big collection of older Indian maps available on the internet, from one of the US Universities, I think. Check out the Maps forum. For outlying and rural areas (and mountains?) they may still be of some practical use!)

i have a high resolution map of India(1946)..i.e. wen India and burma and pak were united..but thts of no use for me...becase i just wanted to locate the tourist destinations..
