Delhi - Shimla

Hi

I'm going from Delhi to Shimla.

I arrive at Delhi airport about 2.25am. I'm thinking of,

1. Take the Himalyan Queen from Delhi at 5.50am, or if I miss that, then take the Shatabdi at 7.40am.

2. Get off at Chandigarh (rather than Kalka), and that will allow me to get an "Express" bus to Shimla.

3. I'm choosing to ignore the narrow band railway from Kalka to Shimla in the interests of time.

4. Likewise I think I have more options for catching an "Express" bus in Chandigarh than I have in Kalka.

I really would appreciate any comments, particularly if my "plan" has any flaws.

Thanks

Tony

Well if you really want to save time and dont mind catching a bus, then the best bet is to catch a bus to Chandigarh as well. It will drop you at the bus stand where you can catch another bus to simla.
You can also get a direct bus to Shimla from Delhi, if you dont mind a long journey.

I always prefer to reach near to my final destination...

...which means I prefer Kalka. All buses going to Shimla will go via Kalka so you can be easily accomodated in any of them enroute.

Even if you go to Chandigarh it should not be an issue since buses to Shimla ply at regular intervals... Before deciding, just find out how far the Bus Stand for Shimla buses is from Chandigarh Railway Station. I have no clue.

I would have advised you to catch a direct bus from Delhi to Shimla but that may not work out as most buses ply in the evening so as to reach Shimla early morning.

Enjoy!!

Thats not true actually.

HRTC runs a Volvo Ac Coach to Shimla from Delhi at 6-30 am.

To the OP - If I was you, I would take this bus rather than take train to Kalka/Chandigarh and then break my journey from there.

Since your flight lands at 2-25 am (and assumingly is an international flight), you have enough time to reach ISBT even if you get stuck up in immigration and baggage. Volvo is convenient, air-conditioned and they play recent hindi movies too (Pirated though, grrrr)

Volvo tickets can be booked online - http://www.hp.gov.in/hrtctickets/Default.aspx

I'd say taking the train from Delhi to Kalka, then a bus from Kalka to Shimla would be kind of backwards. The narrow-gauge train was one of the highlights of my trip to Shimla--breathtaking vistas, cute little villages alongside the tracks, a relaxing chance to sit and ride.

First Volvo from Delhi leaves Chandigarh at 12 noon. So if you are traveling by train to Chandigarh, catching this bus will not be a problem. You will have to reach sector 43 bus station to catch this bus and not sector 17 bus station.

I desist traveling in hills in day in VOLVO as mountain sickness makes the travel lot uneasy. Just a thought!!
