delhi-shimla-rohru-chansal? HELP
hi all
i have done delhi-shimla-rohru three times (june 04,aug 04,dec 04) really have fallen in love with rohru valley's beauty in aug , did go ahead of rohru , chirgaon and then larot..den there is no road and we had to leave our bikes. the locals told us that the chansal pass is abt 3/4 hrs treking from there but coz of lack of time , we came back i am looking at doing this route again in 1st week of june does ne one have any idea abt how to get to chansal pass or abt "dodar-kwar" village , which is of the most isolated villages in himachal (dey came to know abt independence of india after 3 yrs!!! ) i did many searches on google but got no answers.. one link did mention that one road has been recently made.. i am thinkin of making rohru my base and then exploring the area on bike and then leavin the bike where the road ends and trek for a day maximum and then back to delhi (return via chakrata instead of shimla) also , ne one interested in doing this route in 1stweek of june ? |

Hi
Hi,
The valley is my home .... It is beautiful .... your idea is wishful thinking ..... cause there is no road which exists beyond rohru upwards to Chanshal and Kinner kailash .... I would suggest ... make rohru your base ... trek til Chandernaun lake and back .... move upto Tons valley (MORI, HARSIL) and then expplore the area around ... make trips to Lakhamandal and other places .... dont forget to check out the over 100 years ols log huts all across the way ..... and yes better if you to Delhi via chakrata rather than Shimla .... cheers, dhananjay |

I have trekked the Chasil ghatii from Dodra kwar region to Larot. No road. Very long trekking day from Gajaini thach to Larot, most of my team were very tired. There were big patches of snow/ice on Chansil Ghati in beginning of June.
Hope that answers your question. Two legs is the only way up. Its a very long trek. The first roadhead on the other side is at Naitwar which comes after three/four trekking days. Rohru and the River Pabbar valley are very beautiful, this i have to agree ![]()

delhi-shimla-rohru-almost chansal pass
hi all
had been thinkin of doing jalori pass ( JALORI PASS (kullu district) on 29th-31st may ) but instead me and two of my friends (one being the member "tiger") did rohru on 29th/30th and 31st may.. first day saw us leaving delhi at 4:45am , reachin rohru via ambala-shimla-kharapathar-rohru at kharapathar , we took a 6km jeep road to giri-ganga shrine. very steep , bad road , but once we were up , worth it. we being on bikes , made it to rohru (app 465kms) by 8pm and stayed at hptdc rest house (175 per room per night) day 2 saw us driving towards chansal pass thru chirgaon and larot. we cud go only for about 36kms from the rest house in rohru. the roads became pathetic. the buses go only till larot village because of bad roads. ultimately we parked our bikes abt 2kms ahead of larot. we could see snow on the chansal mountains. accordin to locals , the pass is abt 4hrs from there by foot (8hrs for us ) came back to rohru by evening and spent the next 4hrs on the river side. had dinner too along the river side. it was an amazing experience. the river flowing a feet away , the light from the bike's headlight parking bulbs , the cool winds , complete isolation.. day 3 saw me leavin early by 8am to be at delhi (this time via narkanda) by 8pm , whereas my other two frens , who left late , had to cut short their trip near shimla due to heavy rains. i will post the pics soon. every one , plz do rohru once.its a small cute town around the pabbar river.. the valley is a great place.wen we were on the river bed , we could still see snow in the background (the town is at a height of just 1550mtrs!) |

I did the trip till rohru from a different route. Returned just yesterday. Will write in details later but like to mention that my trip was mostly on finding the best Guest House in the Rampur- Rohru sector. Did the Rampur- Taklesh- Baleh - Sungri- rohru- hatkoti-Shimla route on a jeep. The Baleh PWD guest house and the Sungri PWD Guest House were fantastic. Did a trek to the Moral danda peak (10,800 ft), had snow at the top. The Sungri GH was the cutest, pre independence era, with the HPTDC making a 6 room hotel just below the G H. Will be operational from October. Chanchal valley was good. Since I had just come from the Baspa Valley, I would certainly rate Baspa as the loveliest specially from the Rakcham and Basseri. More later. Sungri and Baleh stand out for the good chicken and hospitality. Bye |

hi all here is my writeup and pics
http://photobucket.com/albums/y22/yo...1%20june%2005/ http://photobucket.com/albums/y249/salilxbhp/Rohru/ I was itching to go to long trip for some time now (last being in March with Sunny to Ajmer). Finally it was decided that Salil (Rare-Devil) Bunny and I would go to Rohru, even though we have been there on our last trip to Himalayas in December last year. 29th may: Delhi- Ambala-Kalka-Shimla-Theog-Kharapathar-Giri Ganga-Kharapathar-Rohru We were leaving on 29th May as I had my last paper on the 28th. After I came home I called up bunny and we decided to meet at his place at 3:45am, then I gave a call to salil and he told me that he will come to my place by 3:30am and then we would both leave for bunny’s home. As always I didn’t get much sleep before the trip (30min to be exact!!). Salil was running a bit late and reached my home by 4:10am. At 4:20am after saying bye to my mom, sis and dad, Salil and I went to bunny’s place. He was waiting outside his apartment complex and he was a little bit angry coz we made him wait for such a long time. After a quick greeting, we all started heading for the petrol pump to tank up. My bike was just reaching the reserve level so she drank the most petrol 15.26 liter to b exact! Petrol pump attendant was curious to know where we were going and when he heard we were going to Himalayas, there was a smile on his face. After tanking up we went nonstop till Karnal, where we had a small break and some quick photos. Next stop was Ambala where Akshay was waiting for us with his brand new Karizma. We chatted for a while and took some pics and said bye to Akshay. Now it was 8oclock and we were all very hungry since after dinner last night, none of us had any thing. So we decided to stop at a Dhaba, we ate paranthas and drank lassi now we were ready to rip again. Soon we were in Kalka and after 5 months away from the hills “we were back”. Salil and Bunny soon started ripping, however I was feeling vary sleepy at this time and suspension and tyre problem made me very slow. But it was still fun cruising in the hills. We were running a bit late so we took the Shimla bypass I was hoping to visit Shimla coz I had never been there before and even on the last trip we skipped Shimla, I was a bit disappointed, but destiny had some thing else planned for me (more on that later ). Just before Kufri we stopped for Lunch and went into a small Dhaba. We decided to go in the balcony coz of the great view of hills it offered. Then came the food, I had ordered rajma-chawal my favorite, but the taste of them made me sick!!! That was the worst food I ever had!! I was trying to gulp down rajma-chawal with the help of Pepsi and I was able to eat one third of it, at that point I simply gave up. Now I was not only feeling sleepy, but I was also feeling like I was going to throw up. We again started our journey through the twisty hill roads and in some patches road widening work was going on so we were doing offroading on the road! Bunny and Salil were enjoying the offroading part and as many of u know I hate offroading, so I was getting more bugged. Soon after some breaks we reached giri-ganga, last time around we had tried doing the same stretch of 4x4 jeep road which was covered with snow and we were only able to cover 3-4kms of the 6km route. Now I was sleepy and still feeling sick after the lunch. Didn’t wanted to do all that offroading, however had to do it. Took me 30min’s to cover the entire 6km route which had every thing from sand to razor sharp stones. When I finally made it to the top it was a nice place however now I was feeling dizzy. Drank tea and took some pics. The tea stall owner offered us to stay there, however when I checked my cell phone there was no signal and that place doesn’t had any phones either. I had to call back home, otherwise every one would b worried at home. So we started our descent downhill. Once we reached down to Kharapathar, finally my cell catched some signals and I was able to call back home, at which point mom was already wondering why I hadn’t called yet. Then we started our journey to our final destination for that day Rohru. Now it was dark, Bunny decided to rip again, while me and salil were ridding together just like the past two trips we had done (Rohtang-pass and Himalayas). At Hatkoti we caught up with bunny and all three of us rode to Rohru. Once in Rohru we again went to the same guest house, where we had stayed on our last trip. Got a room there and decided to head back to the restaurant where we had dinner last time. Finally had some tasty food and went back to the hotel, after which we all went for a small walk. On our walk we found a frog and me and Salil discovered that Bunny is a bit scared of frogs . came back to out room and finally retired for the night.30th may : Rohru-Chirgaon-Larot- River bed we got up late in the morning, but we washed up quickly and bunny brought omelets and buns for the breakfast. When bunny checked his bike, he found his bike was dangerously running low on engine oil so he went in search of engine oil. He finally got it, but it was at a Bajaj service center!!! Now Bunny went to Bajaj service center on his Hero Honda Karizma and they toped up engine oil for him and they also tightened the chain, Salil and I also had loose chain so we got them tightened as well. At this point we discovered that salil’s bike had a puncture. We got the tyre tube replaced and at this point we got the news that Sunny had a crash in Pune. We were all worried and tried calling him, but his cell phone was switched off. Now we started heading towards Chansal pass, not knowing how much of it we would be able to cover. After the night sleep I was able to ride a little bit faster than the last day. The roads were all dirt tracks, but the scenery surrounding us more then made up for it. In the middle of the ride, a light drizzle started and I was not in a mood to cover steep 4x4 jeep road in rain, but salil convinced me to continue and I am glad that he did. After some time the rain got a bit hard so we took shelter in Larot. After the rain eased down we continued ahead. After around 4kms we came across a turn which was covered with slush, bunny and salil decided to put a log in the middle of it. Bunny crossed over and went some further only to return to tell us that there was a small stream flowing in the middle of the road so we would not be able to make it any further. At this point we decided to leave our bikes there. Salil and Bunny went to trek while I stayed on top of a small mountain. Took some pics there and shot a small video, at which point the memory in my digital camera got filled. After about 40minutes salil and bunny returned and we trekked a little bit further up the dirt trek and found a spot perfect for camping. Shot some pics using my cell phone. Now we decided to head back down and once we came back to Larot we were amazed to find a bus there! Larot is connected using a bus service, hats off to the driver of the bus who brought the bus so high on a road, which made every nut and bolt in our bike and every bone in our body loose! Finally came down from the climb and stopped at a tea stall where we all had maggi and tea. At this point a cute doggie came, so I decided to feed her some cream biscuit I was carrying and ended up giving her 8-10 biscuits. At this point schools were getting off, so we and our bikes were surrounded by curious kids. Then we proceeded down to Rohru all the time the rain were off and on, nothing serious but enough to make the ride a bit tough and at the same time much more fun. We all ripped hard till Rohru. Once reaching there we decided to look for a cyber café to transfer the photos to cds, we were unable to find one. But we did find a ice-cream wala and we all had Custard-milk with ice cream 10bucks each glass! We wanted to spend some time on the river so came back to the guest house first where we got a call from sunny. We were glad to hear that he was doing fine, at this time we also got the news about the problems on the roadie’s g2g. We decided to reach the river bed where we all parked our bikes, I wanted to eat there so we decided that we will have our dinner at river bed itself and bunny again went to get some food. He came back with aloo paranthas, dal and Pepsi. We all ate there and also shot some pics in the dark and enjoyed the peace that was there away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. We finally decided to head back to hotel by 9:45. After coming back we discovered we had forgotten to lock the room, but we were glad to see nothing was missing. After which we started chatting and planning which route to take tomorrow, at about 11:00am bunny saw a face peeping from the window who said “soye nahin kya?” bunny got the scare of his life and he literally jumped three feet in the air!! It was none other than the care taker of the guest house who saw lights were still on and got a bit curious . He came in to our room and we asked him which road should we take tomorrow and warned us not to take the road to chakrata as the route is filled with robbers and roads are not good either! He gave us another route of rohru-Batshal pur-baggi-narkanda-shimla-delhi. We decided to take his advice, bunny wanted to reach home early so he said he would leave early alone. We all went to sleep, in the middle of the night I heard some noise, so I woke salil up, who told me to take a look through the window to see who was there. I got up from the bed and went to look, only to discover the noise was being made by a rat which was in the trash can!! We both went to sleep after that. 31st may : rohru-Batshal pur-baggi-narkanda-shimla In the morning I got up at around 7:00am and I told bunny and salil to wake up, at this point bunny told salil to go back to the sleep and both of the went to sleep again! They finally got up at 8oclock after the caretaker came and told them to wake up. Bunny got up and was ready to go out. While salil was packing his bag he noticed some thing in his bag, it was the same rat! Salil got angry seeing this while bunny and I had laugh of our life! We finally let the rat go, bunny bid farewell to us and went alone. An hour later me and salil were ready to hit the road so I got my bikes tank filled with 10 liter of petrol. We took the route the caretaker had told us about and roads were not bad. After some time I heard some noise coming from the bike, it seemed to me that it was either the chain or the gearbox! I got a bit worried coz didn’t wanted get stuck coz of the bike problem. So I decided to go slow. We finally had our breakfast in a small tea shop, bread-omelet and tea. Locals were curious to know where we were coming from and when we told them the routes we have take and places we have seen, we could see a proud smile on there face, this happened every where we went. People in hills are vary nice and they always welcome you with a big smile on there face. We again hit the road and found what a lovely roads they were! It pays to take roads less taken and enjoy the nature at her best every where. We didn’t have time to take shower and it looked like god wanted to us to take a shower so everywhere we went we were followed by rain! Most of time it was slow however at some points it poured heavily. At one point there was hailstorm as well! We had to take shelter under a small shop in a village. At this point a local told us, that at this time of year they don’t get much rain here! We could see the dry roads being covered by the rains that were accompanying us! At one point salil was ahead of me and stopped to take some pics coz it was sunny there and the roads and scenery were absolutely gorgeous! He told me as soon as he heard my bike coming there, the sky got filled with clouds!!! He said it looks like there is a GPS attached with u lol. The roads were just amazing and we were enjoying every bit of them. We decided that we will come back to these roads again and we will do that soon. Just 5kms before baggi roads again got bad and that continued for 10 more kms. Some where in between I got a call from bunny telling us that he was around one and a half hour ahead of us and he didn’t see any rain clouds!! 8-10kms before narkanda roads again got good and I was able to do 75kmph in hills. Once we reached narkanda we started contemplating a small stop at Kufri, however faith had some thing else in stored for us. Roads after narkanda were a beauty to ride on and despite the tyre and suspension problem I was leaving every car behind. At this time heavens gate opened up again and this time they came down hard! We took shelter under a bus stop; it was looking like we would not be able to reach home before midnight. The rains eased up a bit so we decided to carry on. After some distance it again started to rain heavily. I was enjoying the rain and wanted to ride, but salil was worried about the luggage so we decided to stop at a Dhaba and eat lunch. That stop turned out to be more then two hours long. Every time the rains eased up a bit we loaded our luggage and even before we could start our bike the rains were back in force. It seemed like the mountains didn’t want us to leave so soon. Finally we decided to continue even in the rain and at this time my bike was making that noise again. Only once we reached Shimla rain eased up once there it was already 6oclock, so we were in fix to continue to Delhi or not. Salil wanted to spend another night in hills, but I wanted to continue on despite bikes problem. As always salil convinced me to stay there so we decided to stay at Shoghi. After we crossed Shimla, we stopped our bikes at a point and again we started the same old argument should we continue or not. Just then Salil told me to look at a pulsar with luggage carrier, it was nicely done and we thought about talking to that guy about it. Before we could even say anything that guy took a u turn and came to us. He introduced himself as Amit Reddy and he is on all India tour on his pulsar 180! So introduced I myself and salil and we chatted for a while he told me that the Bajaj service center was down the road and I can get my bike check from there since it was still open. So we exchanged no’s and me and salil went to the service center to get the bike checked and found it open and after getting a test ride on the bike the service center mach said timming chain was loose. Then we further went to Shoghi and checked into a small hotel and at this point we called up Amit and asked him if could have dinner with us, he said yes so we went to scandal point and met him there. While eating dinner he told about his philosophies and why he is doing this ride and what all problems he is facing on the trip. It was an amazing experience sharing ideas and experiences with some one who is doing a trip that I would love to do some day. By 11:30 we were back in our hotel room. 1st June: Shoghi-Kalka-Ambala-Delhi Next morning we got up at 10:30am and by 11:05am we were ripping nh22. Didn’t take much rest just went fast, since salil had a shift at 8:00pm. Stopped for breakfast cum lunch before Zirkpur. Then we started ripping again. The weather was getting bad by every minute and strong cross winds were making our bike wiggle from one side to the other. The progress was tough but we continued at 95+kmph. Hot weather made sure that we were taking water and butt rest every half an hour. After Sonipat we were continually doing 100+ I was able to touch 120kmph without crouching and with luggage on my back. Salil did 127kmph on the same stretch. We finally reached Delhi border by 5oclcok we bid farewell to each other after I took the final snap of the trip using my cell phone cam. I reached home by 5:40pm, having gone for three nights and four days, covering 1119kms of rough and hard terrain and still my bike gave me an average of 38.6kmpl not bad for pulsar 180 classic, which is more then three years old and has been through so much abuse.
