I was going through the following
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dharamsala

The page mentions
Nearest railway station is Chakki Bank at Pathankot, which is 3 hours from Dharamsala

Then I went to http://www.trainenquiry.com

Selected New Delhi (NDLS) to Pathankot (PTK)
Total of three trains were returned
(please see New Delhi to PATHANKOT.gif)

Selected New Delhi (NDLS) to Chakki Bank (CHKB)
Whoa!! A bunch of trains were returned
(Please see New Delhi to CHAKKI BANK.gif)

What am I doing wrong?
What would be a better option?

My intentions is to leave on July 25th Friday late evening.
I am OK with Train or Bus.
Checked cleartrip for air tickets. It was around 15k for two adults.

I want to come back on July 29th early morning

Any suggestions?

Why do you think you've done anything wrong? There are simply more trains from Delhi to Chakki Bank than there are to Pathankot.

(Chakki Bank is a junction. Some trains passing through it go to Pathankot while others go to Jammu Tawi).

Thanks! My knowledge with Indian Railways have always been a bit weak!

What do you recommend? Chakki Bank or Pathankot? I can travel to either one? Which one is better for Dharamshala?

Also, how is Chakki Bank? anything worthwhile in the city for a first time tourist?

Pathankot is nearer to Dharamsala, offers a convenient arrival time (10:40am) and there's a frequent bus service between the two. Chakki Bank isn't too far from Pathankot, though, so it would be easy to take a taxi.

I wouldn't say that either place has much to offer a tourist.

Trains to Chakki bank are much faster that most of the trains that go to Pathankot.

And Pathakot bus station is hardly 10 minutes in a shared auto from Chakki bank train station. It would be similar to landing by train in any city and taking a ride to the bus station...

I will not differentiate between the two and would take the train that suits my timing.

As told, Chakki Bank is a junction just outside Pathankot. It is well connected by local road transport. Coming from Delhi, the line leftwards goes to Jammu and rightwards to Pathankot from Chakki Bank. Major Express trains and Superfasts skip Pathankot but stopping at Chakki Bank and then proceed towards Jammu to save time. As Pathankot station is a terminal. Any train going there have to undergo a loco reversal. E.g, the locomotive have to be detached from the front and the reversed backwards through another line and again attached to the end of the train, the train now proceed backwards. It takes a lot of time. You will find all the train entering Pathankot has a scheduled stoppage of 20-30 minutes for this loco reversal purpose. For a tourist, dont bother. Chakki Bank and Pathankot are pretty same area. But if you are to board the Kangra Valley Railway (narrow gauge), it starts from Pathankot station. If you want to go to Dalhousie or Dharamsala, you can alight at any of the stations.
....life is a journey.....and the journey is more important than the destination........

There is no difference for a person who has to go to Dharamshala. Just see the timings of the train that suits you, whether it goes through Chakki bank or Pathankot won't make much of a difference. As you have alrready checked you get more trains for Chakki bank than for Pathankot.

Chakki Bank & Pathankot are two railway stations of Pathankot which are 5 km apart. People of Pathankot have been requesting railways for a long time to name the station as Pathankot cantt to avoid confusion.

Yes, more trains are available for Chakki bank as the most Jammu bound trains don't go inside the city.

T.I.P,

If you are planning to hire a vehicle for your rest of the trip (for reaching Dharamsala say), it would be cheaper from Pathankot city area, than from CHKB station complex. CHKB has a taxi stand though, but options are limited and generally they overcharge a bit. A couple of local travel/car rental guys are around who source the car from PTK agents and simply enjoy a cut charging you a bit more than the PTK agents would.

Thank you.
