Hi all, please recommend a clean, cheap hotel/guesthouse that is popular with backpackers and is in the happening part of town. Budget is max. 800.

Dozens of backpacker places. Off the top of my head: a place called Akash is very popular, Om Guest House, Yellow Guest House, Travel Lodge, Dhensum Guesthouse, Tibetan Ashoka and a bunch of places down the bottom of the Yongling Stairs including Sharma Cottages. i don't think that many/any of them do advance bookings but you could try Google.
