I am planning to go to chandratal in the last week of july...is that a good time to go? Could anyone please tell me wether porters etc can be hired from batal or should all arrangements be made from manali? Could anyone please also suggest some other treks in manali area for around 5-6 days in this season...

Chandratal

Jeeps go upto Chandratal nowadays.

The Hampta Pass crossing is a good trek.

Start from Jagatsukh and cross Hampta Pass on day 4. You end up at Chatru Road head where you can hire some vehicle to Chandra tal and back.

Hi! A much nicer way to get to Chandratal is to walk from the Kunzum La,basically all the way down,11 kms long and easy. There you can find some tented accomodation so no need for porters or guides.

Chandratal

I am doing Manali-Hampta Pass- Batal (Kunzum La)-Chandra Tal-Baralacha La from the 5th to the 15th of July.

Porters can be arranged from Batal; but it is safer to do so from manali itself. You can take a jeep from manali to batal via the rohtang pass and then walk upto chandratal (3hrs at the most) which is a very pleasant trek.

in case your schedule coincides with mine lemme knw, as i am looking for fellow trekkers too.

as ever

avid trekker - do you know how much is one/two seats from kaza to chandertal and then perhaps onward to manali? i heard bargains to be had as they return empty this way often???

can i bus to kuzum lah and then walk to chandertal and then return to batal and pick up bus south?? how many hrs from kunzum? is there any picturesque advantage from either trail? animals/birds?

monkgonemad, the regular traffic is from Kaza to Manali, very often ferrying peas, potatoes and the like. They return empty from Manali. The fares are slightly lower than bus fares.

Chandratal is "off" this route. No "ferries" possible. I had taken an entire jeep from Manali for three days so I won't know the "ferry" cost.

The landscape is barren. Apart from Chandratal itself, i found most of the landscape depressing. Most of Ladakh is similar. [i am biased towards green areas] Wildlife [esp. avifauna] can be seen if you are trekking.

Hi! The peas truks are there just during harvest time, few days and business is over. Most of the trucks come full from Manali and go back empty. I think I already mention to you Monk that the fare for the bus was last year 152 Rs. You can walk to Chandratal from Kunzum La but in order to catch the bus to Kaza in Batal you have to sleep at the lake and walk the morning after, the bus reaches Batal between 11 AM and 12 noon, or you can try your luck with a truck, but there are not so many. On the trek the animals you will probably see are the goats of the Gaddis. But you don't have to walk too far from Kaza to see flocks of blue sheep.

Permits ?

What is the permits situation for Chandra Tal and - more importantly - if one wishes to go on towards Baralacha La & Sarchu ?

NO permits needed for Chandra tal, Baralacha La all the way upto Leh. From Pang one CAN go into "permit" area without being checked. [pang, Tso Kar, Tso Moriri(Korzok) and back to Pang.] The permits for Tso Moriri are checked at Mahe Bridge which does not come on this route at all.

Not advising you to break the law... just on the permit issue.

Happy travels to baralacha la and chandra tal !!

thanks avid and voyager.

voyager - im attempting raods permitting to do other way round so no need for bus from batal to kaza. i had read th ewalk from kunzum la is ez and downhill??

i guess my original question.. share jeep price from kaza-chandertal-manali (if the route exists???). but i will find out soon enough. i worry about walking alone, not necc for safety but for injury and a bit for safety.

i will second - no permits needed to chander tal.

HI! To go to Manali from Batal you need to be in Batal early or sleep there, the accomodation available is very basic but possible. From Kunzum La to the lake is down all the way besides a bit of easy climbing in the beginning, from Chandratal to Batal there is a road so I think you can easily do all these alone.
