Good planning. Mid October is alright. Very less chance of snowfall. You will get regular bus service from Manali. I'll be there during 25th Sept to 12th oct at Losar valley for exploration. Once I came back I can give you the latest information. Look at my album for chandratal photo.
Thanks

I read in many places in this forum as well as in other forums that contradicts this views.

Chandratal gets dicey even in end Sep, forget mid Oct.
The high passes of trans-himalayan region starts getting snowfall from Sept onwards.
The Batal dhaba itself winds up in Sep end and the drive way gets officially closed in Oct, PWD doesn't clear the snow on that link road from Oct onwards. The makeshift accomodation near Chandratal also winds up during mid sep.

I couldn't find any description / trevellogue / trip report of Chandratal in Mid October in IM or other popular forums. If you are aware of any successful Chandratal trip/ attempt during mid Oct, request you kindly let us know and if possible the link of the travellogue.

Cheers!!

Kshil is absolutely right. I have just come back from Chandrataal (last week) and the dhaba at Batal closes on 15 Sept (give or take a week). Middle October is not a possibility.

Alternatively, you could do something like this, but i think this will be a touch and go plan:

Get to Manali and find out the latest road conditions. If it hasnt snowed and iof the roads ar open, then hire a car to Kaza and Back (HP roadways has buses between Kulu and Kaza, a number of times a day). On the way to kaza, take the jeep/car on the motorable road to Chandrataal (branches off 2 kms after Batal), visit the lake, come back and drive back to Kaza. Next day, come back to Manali.

Like i said, the weather in the hills can be tricky. The road that is peachy today can be washed off the face of the earth within a couple of hours. So i guess, you can visit Chandrataal in October, but it will be cutting it a bit fine.

As an addition to what is mentioned above, anyone who is interested to visit Chandratal must follow bsenroy's latest blog (the link given in his signature) to this heaven. Though the actual journey to Chandratal is not yet uploaded, but the journey till Batal is brilliantly written with some amazing snaps. I am sure when full blog would be published, you would be able to see the road and the region and appreciate our concerns with the weather that the region in all probablity may face during Mid October.

I have been tracking the Chandratal trips for quite sometime now and my observation is most (almost 90%) of the successful Chandratal trips are done between July and August.

I am not discouraging you as it would be extremely foolish to even try to predict Himalayan weather, best bet is what bsenroy mentioned, enquire in Manali or even better if you time proceed through Shimla/Kaza and enquire there directly, it would be surely shorter and easier to access from Kaza than from Manali, as Rohtang this year is a perennial problem and Gramphoo-Batal road is something that you could only appreciate by experiencing it.

Wish you all the very best for your journey.

Cheers!!

Dassurai,
I am not sure about this one:
5. Batal to via Kunzum Pass Chandrataal

kunjum is not on the way. You mean you'll go up to Kunjum and again come back for Chandratal?

I did the same in last Sep. itself :
Manali > Baralacha La > Chandratal > Batal trek in Sep 09

You'll get latest update from Manali taxi stand (once you are there). But be prepared you may need to face some difficult road condition like i did : http://picasaweb.google.com/PixOfSom...96849895061682
- if you are lucky you'll be able to take your jeep.

Manali to Manli jeep rental would be better - don't expect any public transportation. it was 2000/- per day (Sumo / Spacio / Quails) last year.

Chandratal has 2 approaches, one from Kunzum Pass, that is a trek route but usually regarded as more scenic and all downhill. The 2nd approach is from Batal through the link road that is usually drivable during July/Aug, relatively easy trek but longer than first route. Sometimes people plans for a round trip, starting from Kunzum, walk down to Chandratal then come back via Batal route. Advantage is using all down kunzum route for a shorter trek, nicer views and get a round trip. What I understand is that's his plan but it is almost impossible to execute in Mid Oct unless nature springs a surprise for him.

i'd like to know how can one travel from batal to kunzum?
as i read in bsenroy's blog, batal is nothing but a group of dhabas, providing bare essential food and overnight accommodation!
do you get jeeps and buses from batal to kunzum?

also, if one plans to reach batal on his car/bike, is it safe to park the vehicle at batal, go to kunzum - chandratal and be back to batal with a round trip?

Zack, rightly you understood Batal is nothing but group of Dhabas and that too seasonal, From November you won't find anything in Batal until next June. Batal to Kunzum is the uphill road to Kunzum Pass from Chandra Valley side and so this stretch of road itself is not an all weather road, usually passable till Kunzum pass is open. You can go there by your bike/car if Kunzum is open. During July to Sep, when Manali-Kaza HRTC bus operates, you can even use public transport for this stretch. Don't expect to get Jeep from Batal unless you get a seat luckily in some share jeep that goes from Manali to Kaza.

If the Batal Dhaba is open, I believe you can safely park your bike there and go for a round trip hike.

Cheers!!

You can park anywhere in this region, all are for you but in Kunzum, in June I found a make shift PWD tent and nothing else, so if you are comfortable parking it in no man's land, it's fine.

Batal to Chandratal link road won't be more than 2 km, I guess and easily walkable, actually people starts trekking from Batal only. Some more treks / expeditions like CB ranges also start from Batal, CB range trek takes other side of Chandra river (right bank) where as Chandratal takes the left bank road.

Cheers!!

Sometimes the Rothang is open in to December , most years not. See http://korta.nu/manleh for updates

Some photos of the trek here. It┤s not all downhill from Kunzum La , you start with going up less than two hundred meters - which you definitely will notice , having just arrived at 4500. After that , easy walking downhill.
