Chandigarh to Manali by road

Hi all,

I am planning a trip to Manali on the 20 th of this month & require some suggestions:
1- How much time will it take from Chandigarh to Manali while travelling by road in an Innova? Road condition?

2-How much rainfall to expect in Manali during this time? How are HPTDC's log huts?

3-After a few nights halt at Manali, I plan to move on to Keylong. What road & weather to expect during this period?

Appreciate reply ASAP.

Approx 7-8 Hours with a Break for Snacks. Road Conditions are Excellent.
2-How much rainfall to expect in Manali during this time? How are HPTDC's log huts?
Well the Monsoons are ahead of Schedule, U can Expect Moderate Rainfall. Log Huts are Awesome, But make sure u have Prior Resrvations for the same. There are near the Hadimba Mata temple.
After a few nights halt at Manali, I plan to move on to Keylong. What road & weather to expect during this period?
Kyelong is 115 Kms form Manali, Road Conditions would be average. With Little less Rainfall than Manali

Thanks a lot for the reply Balvar. Considering the fact that you are located in Chandigarh, the info provided by you is heartening. We were very apprehensive of road conditions and fear of landslide/mudslide etc. due to rains.

Chandigarh-Manali-Keylong

Just back last week from our trip to Himachal, I share herein the highlights:

1- Chandigarh Manali by road takes a minimum of 9 hours (while travelling in a loaded Innova) not 7-8 as mentioned elsewhere in this forum.
2- HPTDC Log Huts offer you value for money & the best view among all lodgings available in Manali.
3- Food is good to excellent at most places. Some suggestions - Mountview restaurant on the Mall for Tibetian Thupka, El Forneo for Pizzas, Chocolate cake & Tiramisu, Johnsons Cafe for Trout.
4- For kids, try river crossing etc. near the Club House or the the mini amusement park near Hidimba temple.
5- Do visit the Hidimba temple for its beauty, originality & surroundings. Forget Vashisht if you are not the religeous types. The hot water baths which I longed for have been dismantled.
6- The Tibetian bazaar down the Mall offers good deals. Bargain down to 50% of quoted prices.
7- Forget Rohtang if you are going now. The snow there is largely covered with horse shit if not already melted.
8- If you are proceeding beyond Rohtang, the road till Khoksar (20kms) is very bad. Vehicles with low ground clearance not adviced. At Khoksar you get some real good Veg food at the (veg) dhaba.
9- Do go to Keylong not for anything there, but the drive & the beauty of nature is simply breathtaking.

Thats all folks. Need any more info ? Do post on.

Hi ashwin30,
Thank you. I think that is a good info. I am planning to go to Shimla and further from 13th for five days.

01. What will be the best place to see Snow (I meant real snow, not horse shit polluted snow )

02. What will be the best place (according to your experience) to stay at Shimla, and rates?

03. What is the taxi rates around Shimla.. (if you have any idea)?

I would be grateful if you could answer above at your earliest
Thank you,
-Nish

Hi Nishanthe,

I was in Shimla two years back. Manali is quite far away from Shimla. However, I will try to answer your questions as best as possible.

SNOW-It will be difficult to find snow anywhere near Shimla at this time of the year.
STAY-The YMCA is centrally located. They have dorms and a few rooms too. Very economical. However, July being off season, you can bargain anywhere.
TAXI-Depends where you are going. Off season offers great bargains.

Enjoy your trip.

What would you recommend taxi or luxury bus from simla to manali. We are planning to go on July 31 (with two kids).
What are the crowds like these days, is it easy to get transport to Manali, when we get to simla, or do we need to make reservations earlier.
Thanks

Shimla is pretty far way from Manali & since you have children, a taxi will always be better. Nausea is more common in buses in hill driving. July will be lean season, so you can take it easy. Transport from Shimla to Manali should be no problem. Happy motoring & enjoy your vacation.

Being vegetarian, I headed for the Veg dhaba in front of the police post. Suddenly, I see a whole lot of tourists from the Czech republic filing in front of the dhaba. Pretty organised and all of them in a line. No pushing or jostling or someone trying to get ahead. All of them were later gorging on the rajmah, chana and the potato curry and licking their fingers as we all Indians do. Beer was available at room temperature as there were no freezers. But the way they burped, it seemed they were more than happy.
