Bhunda narmedh mahayajna

In Bachoonch village in the Spail valley, Bhunda mahayajna was performed last December to an audience of around 70,000 people. The village is 9 km from Rohru town, this death-defying rope trick held there to please the local deities was performed after a gap of 70 years.

Apparently it was last performed in 1996 in Pujarli village in Rohru tehsil after a gap of 30 years, but i think they may have used a goat rather than a human. I first read about this in Penelope Chetwodes book "Kullu End of the Habitable World" & i think her granddaughter mentions attending this probably in '96 in her book "In Grandmothers Footsteps" Here's a post i did: about her
Lady Penelope Dies In Kullu!

Anyway, hold on to your hats here we go Wooooooooooo!!!! KK

Hi KK,

I already know these videos... Exciting! Read more about the background: http://www.tribuneindia.com/2006/20060108/society.htm#4

This two-centuries-old ritual "Bhunda" was also celebrated a short while ago at Devthi village near Shimla.

The villagers of Nirmand (the "home" of Bhunda) told me last year, that they'd planning in November 2007 to celebrate this festival after more than 25 years again... http://www.tribuneindia.com/2001/200...dows/main3.htm

No, no... "WWW" knows... I would like know all about this, respectively a little bit more.

Of course, Penelope Chetwode's "Kulu" is situated in my library! Seems "In Grandmothers Footsteps" should be the next...

It is a small world! It was the same Yash Raj who gave me the details of Prashar Lake and post this picture of the lake taken by him at by blog.

I will have to wait till the evening to see the videos at home. But the talk around this rope walk sounds scary enough.

I finally managed to watch the videos today and the first part has a lot of animal slaughter on camera, have to admit, I closed my eyes and peered between the fingers to see if we are on to something else.

Also, I was wondering if the crowd is almost all male? Could not see any women on camera. I anyway do not have the stomach to go anywhere near such festivals.
