Hi,

We would be finishing a trek on 4th of July at Manali. What is the best way to go to Bir (we have a booking in Bir Zostel that night)? Is taxi an option?

Or should we take a bus to Dharamshala and go from there?

Cheers

Of course taxi is an option if you want to spend on one. If there's 4 or 5 of you it might be worth it. Check at Manali.

No need to go to Dharmsala first if you take a bus. Take any bus going to Baijnath or Palampur and get off at Bir Chauk on the highway. From there local transport to Bir village. There may well be a bus direct to Bir village but it's not showing online. You'll have to check at Manali.
If you want to travel in comfort you can take the Manali-Dharmsala Volvo, but you'll have to pay the fare all the way to Dhasa (Rs. 782 per head), even if you get off at Bir Chauk. In that case a taxi might work out cheaper.

Thanks for replying

How much would the taxi cost?
Our trek itinerary states that we would be done by late afternoon on a weekday in Manali. So are there buses in the evening to Dharmsala?
Will we get taxi from Bir Chauk if we reach late? say 10 PM and beyond?

I don't know the cost of a taxi, I'm guessing around Rs. 4000. You can call the taxi union at Manali to check. Contacts here (ask for the fare to Bir village).

If you had mentioned earlier that your trek ends late afternoon, I would have mentioned earlier that it's all too tight to get to Bir by bus the same day. What if you get delayed?
Nevertheless - it's approx 185 km from Manali to Bir and will take around 5 hours. The earliest bus listed on HRTC's website going in that direction is at 6.40 pm. But that does not mean there aren't earlier buses, there are many buses not listed online. You would have to check this out at Manali bus station. There will certainly be plenty of buses to Mandi, which is the best option for you if you don't get anything direct to Bir or Baijnath in a reasonable span. From Mandi you should get onward transport to Bir.
I see now that the Volvo to Dhasa doesn't depart till 8 pm, so not of much use to you.

If you hire your own taxi, you can make it to Bir village by night. If you decide to take a bus, check with your hosts what the options are to get from Bir Chauk to the village at night. Also ask if they can arrange a pick-up if required. It's only a short distance anyway.

Plenty of taxi's sat waiting at the bus stand at Bir Chauk. I would just jump on 1st bus out of Manali to Mandi & changeover there if necessary.

I went on that route a year and a half ago in a bus, and it seemed that a smaller vehicle would have been MUCH nimbler and faster. I found those Himachali roads shockingly narrow and winding (and I say this as a person who has lived in the Himalayas for years). Given your time constraints, I think a taxi is necessary, and a public bus just wouldn't really work for you to leave Manali in the afternoon and reach Bir that same evening. If a taxi is far too expensive for you, maybe you could change your booking so that you spend that night in, say, Mandi or somewhere else on the way, and proceed to Bir first thing in the morning.

Agreed, most definitely. i doubt you will find any taxi at the main road arriving after 10pm. It's close but not that close and too steep to walk with luggage.
Check Chamel he's a Bir taxi driver for pick up from Bir Chauk 9816425608
Or Mr Ashwani 9805663399
