Hi folks,

My friends and I have planned a road trip to Laddakh this August, but due to lack of group consensus, Spiti is not on our route.

In the last leg of our journey our route we will be driving from Sarchu to Mandi. Two of us plan to breakaway from our group and head to explore Spiti/Kaza.

Can someone guide me on where to get off between the Sarchu to Mandi route and head to Kaza using a state transport or private bus service.

Thanks in advance

PS. - if there is an option to rent bikes for not more than Rs. 2000 a day, we might consider that as well, but first preference is bus.

Get off at Gramphu just after Khoksar. (There is just a dhaba to mark Gramphu) The Leh Manali road starts climbing towards Rohtang from this point and the road to Spiti over Kunzum La forks off from here. But be warned - there was just one state transport bus operating towards Kaza every day when I was last there a few years back and this situation is unlikely to have changed. The bus passes Gramphu at around 9 am. If you miss that, you will have to depend on trucks or other private vehicles for a lift.

You will find details of how I travelled on this section here - http://kkasturi1.blogspot.in/2013/09/chandra-tal.html

thanks @aarosh and @writersblock.

From both the links the best option seems to be Gramphu, and not Keylong as I thought.

But it seems very unlikely that I would reach Gramphu anytime before 11.30 - 12 pm, because it is a 5 hour drive from Sarchu, as per Google Maps.

So the options open to me (in decreasing order of preference) are -

A. Reach Gramphu by 12ish and try to hitch a truck ride to Kaza the same day - any idea as to how busy this route is, so that we know what our chances are?

B. If we DON'T get the bus on the same day, we stay the night in Gramphu and catch the 9 am bus he next day - any idea whether there are any homestays/ hotels where we can stay. We are 2 guys, so we can rough it out. A quick Google search didn't show any hotels in Gramphu

C. in case there are no homestay options in Gramphu, then we get off at Keylong, spend the night there, and take the 9 am bus from Gramphu the next day.

Koksar is near Gramphu on your way from Sarchu, you will have plenty of stay options there. The route from Gramphu to Kaza is reasonably busy, but predicting whether you will get a hitch is at best a wild guess.

Agree with Somnath. You can stay at Khoksar. If you stay at Keylong, you will have to catch the first bus out from the depot ( not later than 5.30) to make it to Grampoo by 9am. There are no stay options in Gramphoo - unless the owner of the lone dhaba agrees to accommodate you. Vehicular traffic at Gramphoo towards Kaza will die down after 12-1 as drivers would like to cross Kunzum La before dark.

I stayed at PWD Koksar 10 years ago. They give out rooms on the spot, subject to availability. Other than that, the dorm has 10 beds.

Thanks, this information helps.

I will try my luck at Grhampu, and if nothing works, then stay at Koksar

Which means a back-track, I hope you realise that.

Google says it is 5.1 KM.
Shouldn't be much of a problem to hitch a ride or get public transport? If getting a ride is going to be a major problem, then I rather play safe and get off at Koskar and leave the next day

Shouldn't be a problem upto late afternoon (getting back to Koksar, that is).

Considering it's almost 150 km from Gramphu to Kaza along a bad road, you're looking at 7 hours just driving. I personally wouldn't want to attempt this starting around noon, you're better off starting early next morning.

wwoohhh, 7 hours

Google showed it as just around 2 hours.

In this case, I guess our best option is to stay at koskar?

btw, how long does it take from Manali to Kaza by bus?

because if it is going to take roughly the same amount of time to reach Kaza from Manali or Gramphu, then I rather stay in Manali

Er, yes. GMaps (if that's what you mean) tends to rely on best conditions. Not the ground situation here.
Of all the highways in the country, how many do you know of where 140+ km can be covered in 2 hours?

Hmm, you best check a map first to see where all these places lie.

It's an extra 68 km from Manali to Gramphu. Which will take 3.5 hours in best conditions, i.e. no traffic jams upto Rohtang (which are frequent in summer).
