Monkeys around tourist places can be very aggressive grabbing anything they can off you, especially shiny objects, they have been known to bite

Well let us understand one thing that humans have less strength and agility than most animals but we able to scare all other animals as we are different - 2-legged. So if you see Monkeys in wild they will generally run away from human beings. However, in cities, specially in religious places once the monkeys have been in close touch with humans they realize that they are more powerful and faster than humans and so are not afraid of us in fact are very aggressive in places such as mathura.

Having said that the best way to tackle them in some religious towns such as mathura / Ayodhya is to take care of a few thing
  1. try and show you are not scared - I know this is difficult
  2. secure things like your camera and spectacles
  3. dont carry any food items on you
    carry a stick

Something important to add to the list above:

do not make eye contact i.e. do not stare at them.

Most are fine, but watch out for the ones with a tattoo, they tend to have an attitude.

As this is in HP section - i doubt you will come across any aggressive monkeys in the hills, very much doubt whether you can get at all close to them or them to you.

OH yes! I was terrified there. The whole troupe came rushing down the steps past us, with teeth flashing. They also stole an Indian girl's mobile and took it up into the trees!!

Jakhu .. yes, but those ones are the trained ones. I have seen them flick your spects and then go and stop next to a shop, the shopkeeper then takes 5 rs from you and offers them some groundnuts in return for your specs

Yes ! pathetic urban growth....

I don't understand why people flock to Shimla ?? Unless one stays at high end places, there is nothing to enjoy there..
