Airport DEL to himachal pradesh - advice pls

what is the easiest way to go from the airport to himachal pradesh? im flying in from dhaka -a short flight, but i think a day in delhi to get my head round india and prepare for trip north (money, liquor, goodies...) is in order. SO...

airport taxi to parganghj
book tourist bus luxury for rp400-600 in parganghj (as opposed to going to hp tourist on connaught cir) becasue im lazy.
depart these types of buses opp end of parganghj than rr station in eve.
go to hp overnight and get 0 sleep.

sound right?
how do the buses compare to hptc in value, cost, comfort?
the ride to manali is how long??

thanks

HPTDC Deluxe coach to Manali takes approx. 15 hours. Its an overnight journey.

If you are arriving ND in the morning, you can leave for Manali the same evening.

The HPTDC office is at Chandralok building, Janpath.

There is a night train from Old Delhi station to Chandigargh (last time I looked it went at about 22:45 hrs - after your day in Delhi!). Change at Chandigargh for the Toy Train up to Shimla which is great. This is a classic journey.

From Shimla you can get a bus to Manali.

(Check all times etc before you go)

hmmm..... try and get a volvo bus/ or shatabadhi express (approx. 3.5 hrs) to chandigarh, and then from there take a bus to manali.... its barely off the beaten track and its a well commuted journey.. u could also hook up a taxi thingie if there are 3-4 of you..... but since i am a cynic, and going by your name i take it you'll be in the area above kasol/ manikaran.... so please take care in khirganga, udarnaak etc. that you keep the environment clean... do not abuse parvati, or there will be nothing left in 3-4 years... and also, don't go to shimla, as it just increases the journey time....

You don't say what time exactly you get in. That would make a difference.
As mentioned by wanderlust, train is an excellent excellent option and the fastest way as far as it goes!
And yes. This is our home state, so treat it gently! It is God's country.

Kalka express from Del to Kalka which is beyond Chandigarh to shimla if you think you can add that to the itnry. Else the buses from CP- HPTDC or the Himachal Bhavan direct to Manali.
If reachin in the day and not wanting to break your journey then take the first option to Chandigarh and then to Manali if you arrive at a decent time in the morning considering that you will take 15 hrs approx to get to manali from Del.
Spare the Parvati for the others aswell....

The changeover for Shimla is at Kalka, not at Chandigarh.

Track 29
Boy gimme a shine!"

de dum de dum...

I think it was the song that threw me. Yes it's KALKA you change at not Chandigargh.

Parvati overdrive,

With respect to those above who say 'train', I wouldn't bother - stick to the bus; doing the train/bus via Chandigarh or whatever will end up taking longer one way or the other - Chandigarh to Manali is still 10 hours by bus. And I would make the effort to go for the HPTDC bus, at least you wont spend 2 hours leaving Delhi via 20 hotel pickup points.

Delhi to Manali Transport

I arrived in Delhi on flight TG 315 at 2250 on 23 Oct 2004. I hired a taxi inside the international airport for 5,000 rupees to go to Chandigarh. Yes, this is more than double the usual rate. I paid only 2,000 rupees for the Chandigarh to Delhi taxi on 9 Nov 2004. By hiring the taxi inside the airport there was no hassle. My name and destination were written down along with the taxi's license plate. That is a good security precaution. Remember this is in the middle of the night. This taxi reservation counter is open 24 hours a day.

In Chandigarh I hired another taxi across the street from the east side of the long distance bus terminal. It took but 5 minutes to switch taxis at 5:05 am. The Chandigarh to Manali jeep cost 3,000 rupees. When the dust settled, it took only 14 hours to go from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi to Manali. That was without taking the newly opened Kulu Bypass bridge via Bhuntar. I did take the Kulu Bypass bridge for a sidetrip to Manikaran and for my return trip to Delhi.

With 5 pieces of baggage there was no way I was going to haul it all up onto the roof of a bus at the Kashmiri Gate Bus Station. The money I saved by not staying in a Delhi hotel paid for the extra cost of the Delhi to Chandigarh taxi. As a result I had a 15 day stay in Kulu Valley instead of a 14 day stay. Hiring your own taxi enables you to stop when you want at a Dhaba restaurant, English Wine and Beer store (drink Haake Beck NOT Godfather!), or hotel/rest house.

Hurry up and wait? Not me! Waiting cuts in to my serious hammock time.

Note that across the street from the departure terminal there is a large new waiting loungue. It is very convenient if you arrive at the airport 6 hours before your flight departure. The loungue includes a bookstore/newpaper kiosk, a souvenir shop, an internet cafe, a telephone exchange, a snack bar, and a restaurant that serves Kingfisher beer. The internet cafe has a fast connection (unlike Manali) and costs a flat rate of 40 rupees for each half hour. To enter the waiting loungue you must pay 25 rupees.

i would take the shatabdi express to kalka from delhi and then either a bus or taxi from kalka to shimla. if you need to get to manali or dharamsala, i would take a delux bus direct from delhi.

Delhi to Manali

By Train: Well..it is better to get any train bounded for Chandigarh. Almost all trains for Chandigarh has air conditioned coach and you can travel in it. From Chandigarh you can take direct bus for Manali OR Shimla. They have seprate bus terminus for Himachal Pradesh.

By Bus: Direct buses are from Delhi-you can have direct ticket and travel hassle free. Take crae of your luggage and do not take anything to eat from anyone.
