Advice needed for Spiti Itinerary

Hi every one, I will be going to Spiti in the first/second week of June along with a few friends and we will be doing this trip on our motorcycles.

I am looking for suggestions to what all places are worth seeing, both on road and off it. For now here is the initially itinerary I have in mind:

Day 1: Delhi - Kinnaur: stay in the first good hotel we find after entering Kinnaur
Day 2: Need help
Day 3: Need help
Day 4: Need help
Day 5: Need help
Day 6: Reach Chandratal and camp there for the night
Day 7: Reach Manali
Day 8: Manali - Delhi

We don’t have any problem with doing off road riding to reach beautiful vantage points and remote villages; in fact we are looking forward to it. But trekking is some thing we normally avoid but can do if the vistas are worth it.

Suggestions, advice, criticisms are always welcomed

Exclamation Only One Road

Yogesh, there is Only One Road which will fill in the blanks...

Even with a fast run, Delhi to Sarahan [the first "haltable" halt in Kinnaur] will take 16 to 18 hours. You will be pooped, so take the next day off to tour "around Sarahan"

day 2
tour Sarahan on foot or bikes or both. If in the mood, bike it upto Kafnu [3 hrs] and stay next to the big lake.

day 3 Sarahan/Kafnu to Chhitkul [5 to 6 hrs] roam around.

above Sangla is a beautiful meadow named Sangla Kanda, will take half a day to trek up, and 3 hrs to trek down. I assume you won't be trekking

day 4
Chhitkul to Rekong Peo further up to Kalpa, see the views and proceed further[come back down on the highway].... stay at Namgia. If time and [Army Post] permits, walk up to Shipki La and stare into Tibet and the last bit of the Hindustan Tibet Road... which actually goes inside Tibet...

day 5 to Kaza

day 6 to Chandratal [hoping for Kunzum La to Open...][normally it opens within ten days of Rohtang, but this year they have opened up Rohtang a bit sooner...]

I don't know how you can do "Delhi to Kinnaur" in one day...

rest all is easily do-able ...

Hi Avid, I have already been to Sarahan last year. We reached Sarahan in 16 hours with an hour long break at Narkanda for photography and the usual breaks for food, water and some more photography.

This time around I am thinking of leaving at 2-4am which should give us at 16-18 hours worth of riding time on the first day. We will try to go as far as we can before there is no sun light since we really don’t want to ride in Kinnaur after sun set.

As for Sangla, Chitkul and Kalpa, unless we reach one of them on the first day itself we plan to give it a skip. We want to mainly focus on Spiti and maybe explore some off road diversions (all of us like to do off road riding).

Lightbulb Book on Spiti and Kinnaur

The book written by Deepak Sanan and Dhanu Swadi is the authority on Kinnaur and Spiti. Its available in Delhi itself. [Indus Books is a Delhi based publisher.]

Technically you can reach Kaza on the second day itself. [From Sarahan or wherever you halt on the first day]. Kaza to Chandratal is again half a day.

How to dawdle in between Kalpa and Kaza for five days is for you discover. In the Pin Valley, if you can jump over two logs and a stream [which you most certainly can in a team] you can go past Mudh [moooodh] upto Chingput maidan which is a kachcha road. Keep a rope or a cable sort of thing handy, it could help you pull out bikes from a difficult situation [or help you jump over in moooodh.]

Thanks for the link to the thread Mountaintrekker, looks quite interesting let me speak to the rest of the "characters" . As of now I guess there are 4-5 of us, maybe a couple more or couple less, you know how it is.

What about you, wana join in?

Thanks Avid, I am hearing the name of Pin Valley National Park again and again. I guess we can devote a day to it and surrounding areas.

I agree with Avid and knowing you and your gang, I think you'll do it.
I was in Spiti 2 year back and I had 15 days to myself and still I felt it was short. In the end I forgot dates and days, thanks to the army guy in Kibber who reminded me that I had to get back to my office in 2 days and made a dash to Manali and to Delhi. I just made it in time.
So 4-5 days, well not my type but then for you its a looong ride isn't it?
all the best but keep a tab on the road conditions till you leave.
