Hello,
We are travelling from Shimla to Sarahan, Sangla, and then Kalpa. Some of the distance between these are over 7 hours and we would like to break up the journey by staying in some places in between. If anyone could suggest a few places that have good clean places to stay, that would be great. We're then planning to carry on through the Kinnaur and Spiti Valley's, eventually ending up in Manali. We haven't looked at this in detail, but if anything good springs to mind along this route, that would also be very helpful. Tom and Sally |

Having said that, though, the Shimla-Sarahan journey isn't so bad. The scenery is fantastic, and the bus makes several stops for food en route. There is a daily direct bus but it should be avoided, as it makes several detours to minor villages and waits in Rampur for an hour or more; better to get one of the many buses going to Rekong Peo and get off at Jeori, from where it's easy to get a taxi or another bus up to Sarahan. I was going to stop at Rampur for the night but the bus station there is so chaotic, even by Indian standards, that I feared I would never find the right bus again and thus continued straight through to Sarahan. |

You can break journey at Narkanda.
If you search this site on "narkanda" lots of hotel options will pop up... there was a big thread that i recall... After Narkanda, the road descends to the river valley floor and it will be dirty and hot, but Rampur does have some decent and expensive hotels. I don't recommend staying there coz its at a lower altitude and "hot". If you don't mind this, Rampur is another logical break of journey between Shimla and Sarahan.

Avid has said it a perfect way. If you can start early you can reach Saharan in 6 hours. Take a break at Rampur where the river is flowing and you can reach it (Have Lunch there) .. i remember there is a bridge (not used)on the way where you can chill, spend some time there and off you go. |

Hi,
Thanks for all the advice, we are now thinking of getting the bus from Shimla to Thanedhar and staying there for 1 or 2 nights, we are in no rush to get anywhere. The man at the bus information stand in Shimla told us that there is a direct bus to Thanedhar at 1pm daily. What do people think about this idea? I read that Thanedhar is a beaufiful place. We would then get the bus from Thandehar to Sarahan. We have read on the forums that there is the Sun set guesthouse and a PWD guest house but cannot find any numbers for them, can anyone help? Thanks again Sally and Tom ps. what does PWD actually stand for! |

Hi guys .
I am in Shimla now ( sat ) and am leaving at 4 am on the bus to Sarahan area , its a 6 hour trip about . I a getting the bus to Jeori as the direct bus does NOT start in Shimla and could be crowded when it arrives here . I am hoping the early morning buses are relitively empty. Its too late to see you here as I will head to bed now . But look out for me in Sarahan , I will be there for a few days . Seats 1, 4,5,6 on the buses are better for legroom. No advance ticket purchase . Bus station is Ravoli station. Fare 161 RSD to Jeori See you all possible enroute . Check your e-mail Monk . |

Hah! The Indians appear to be a nation of insomniacs, and I'm sure the bus will be bursting at the seams well before it reaches Narkanda, stopping every 3 or 4 minutes to squeeze one more person on...
Tip: The restaurant on the main street at Jeori, just where the bus stops, has a clean western-style toilet out the back and the staff are generally happy for tourists to make use of it. It's a much better bet than the unspeakable public toilet across the road. |
