About Spiti in general.

Hi guys

I have read this forum for a while and now when my trip is near to start i have few questions.

Our(two of us)trip to Leh via Spiti valley starts at 6th (we planned to stay 4-6 nights in spiti before going to Ladakh) August from Shimla. I have read Lp india and different forums so i have a little clue how things are working in Spiti/Ladakh, but still have some questions.

First. Is it difficult to get accommodation in Spiti valley without booking it in advance? Ex. in Rekong Peo, Tabo, Kaza and so on. And especially i mean "cheaper" accommodation: lets say 300-800 r per room.

Second, because we planned to travel with busses mainly, is it hard to get free seats from these Busses(In route from Shimla to Keylong) in spiti valley? Is this road driveable with bus right now? Or is the road blocked, i heard there are some problems in Malling?

And last (for now ), u can share any good hints and places where to stop and what to do/see in this spectacular road.

Thanks in advance, and sorry: my English sucks.

Advance booking is definitely an advantage, but i think you don't have fixed itinerary so that why you are worried for accommodation. You can get decent rooms for 300-800 without much problem. Second Road is open and Malling Slide can be crossed on foot and you can get Buses/Shared Jeeps on other side of Malling. Though sometimes things may not turn out exactly as told/predicted.

Agree with mk26in

I myself am looking for even cheaper accommodation for 100-150 rs in kinnaur/spiti which is apparently possible.
Well the spiti(villages. culture) on this road presents arguably only 30% of whats existing beyond the road.

If you are just brushing through the valley then reach all the spots which are possible from road, langza, kibber, gette and tashigang are awesome high altitude villages, and are possible from the road directly.

Have a nice time.

Hello Koponen,

We are two of us aged 25 & 30 from Bombay. We are travelling the Simla - Spiti - Lahaul route from the 10th -16th of August. Do you think you want to join us so that we can have a shared taxi on the route? From manali we would return and you can carry on to ladakh. Following is our itinerary.
  • Part I
    • 8th Nite: Bombay - Ambala /Kalka
    • 10th eary moring: Kalka - Simla toy train
  • PART II
  • PART III
    • 16th Evening: Manali to Delhi bus
    • 17th Afternoon: Delhi to Bombay train.
The plans are confirmed for the dates. We would be happy to have other travellers join us enroute for the complete itinerary or different legs in any of the section. You can pm me or leave a message if interested in suggestions or travelling together.

I am pretty sure it will be a Fun filled adventure journey with like minded folks driving through the terrains of Lahual and Spiti.

Cheers
Hymz

Koponen...
Avoid any advanced booking...
You'll surely get the 'cheap' but 'good value' accommodation that you are looking out for - that kind usually can't be booked in advance in any case...!

Do stay at the Tabo Monastery Guest House for getting the perfect vibes - the tiny musueum there is part of the Guest House premises... There are a few other newer hotels which have come up, but this is most certainly the best option...

The buses on this route are extremely few and it definitely helps to know in advance the timings... Or else you can be stranded for hours and waste precious time...

The bus from Tabo to Kaza (as you are doing the route going up the Spiti Valley) leaves around 8.00 a.m. sharp... Best to be at the gate atleast 20 minutes earlier...

The one and only bus from Kaza to Kibber (via Ki Monastery) leaves Kaza at 5.30 p.m. (evening) and the same bus leaves Kibber for Kaza at 6.30 a.m. (again via Ki Monastery)... It will be a good idea to visit Ki on your return from Kibber... This, my dear friend is precious information... Kibber incidentally is the highest village in the world which is connected by a motorable road...

Once you are in Keylong, do note that there's an early morning Himachal Roadways bus to Leh - leaves Keylong at 5.00 a.m. sharp

Good luck...!
Bonne Chance...!

Cheers...!

Hi !The bus timings have actually changed so for example the Kibber bus leaves later from Kaza because is the one coming from Peo. So always check and counter check timings with local people and at the bus.And Kibber is not the highest village in Spiti reached by a motorale road,it is Comic at around 4400 meters. And bookings are not really necessary.

How long it will take from keylong to Manali? If we start at 5am from keylong, on what time we expect to reach manali?

Hmm comic also connected by road now ??!!

Keylong to manali is 115 KM , ideally if you are in a car it will take minimum 4 hours to reach manali.

Hey you put the same question in another thread also.
Answering again...
The distance is only 115 kms and starting early morning you should be able to over it in 4-5 hours depending onn rush at Rohtang. The traffic jams from Rohtang to Manali are very common. so it can take a bit long also.

Kalpa is nice. Kalpa is also a major point in acclimatization since it´s located midway in altitude between Shimla & Sarahan (2800) and Nako & Kaza (3600-ish) . Peo on the other hand is lower than both Shimla and Sarahan.
