3 days in McLeodGanj .. What to do..

Just taking time out of work and leaving for McLeodGunj tonight with few friends and colleagues...
i have been there a couple of times, but still Just wanted to know what are other travellers experiences in that amazing place..
where to go specially..
what not to miss ..
any short treks..
any beautiful wakling paths.
nice place to drink.. have food.. dance..;-) ..
i generally stay in a guest house around 3 kms up from McL on the way to Dharmkot.. (same way as Triund..) ..

I just came back from Mcleodganj last week after spending 7 days. Its a beautiful place and you do not feel bored if you go alone. The places to see are:

1). Bhagsu Water Fall which is about 3kms from the main bus stand.

2). Dal Lake which is about 3kms from the main bus stand, 1kms further you can visit a serenic place by the name NADDI, and another 500metres another serenic place by the name TALNU.You can visit the TCV( Tibetean Children Village) a must see place.

3). Visit the famous Dalai Lama Temple which is about 500metres from the main bus stand.

4). Visit the St.Johns Church at Forsythganj 1 kms before Mcleodganj.

5). You can drive down to Dharamsala in a local jeep which is about 09kms from Mcleodganj. It charges Rupees Seven only per person from Mcleodganj.

6). In Dharamsala, you can visit the Kangra Museum of Art which is just a walking distance from the main Dharamsala Bus Stand. From Dharamsal Bus Stand you can either walk down 4 kms to the Martyrs Memorial or take a bus ride. Bus Ride will cost you Rupees Four only per person. From the war memorial you can walk down to a famous temple by the name Kunal Pathri. Its prefered to walk down to this beautiful path surrounded by Tea Gardens. Not a good bus service to Kunal Pathri.

7). You can visit the scenic Palampur which is appx 1.5hrs from Dharamsala Bus Stand by road.No bus service from Mcleodganj. The fare is Rupees 31/-only per person. Lot of service from Dharamsala.

8). If Interested in Trekking, you can go to Triund which is 09kms walikng distance from Mcleodganj. You can take a short cut from Dharamkot as well. If you have plans to stay a night in Triund, you need to take permission from the Forest Office which is located in Dharamsala near the General Hospital / Dharamsala Courts.

9). If interested in Hard Drinks, its better if you carry your own stuff. There are no govt.vends in Dharamsala or Mcleodganj. The prices are quite high in these areas and as you go up because of the taxation problems.The drinks available are:

1). Beer- Fosters/ Haywards 5000/Haywards 1000/Godfather and Kingfisher Strong.

2). Whisky- Most of the Brands. A quarter will cost you Rupees 20/-more than MRP. Royal Stag half is for rupees 160/-to 180/-.

3). Vodka-White Mischeief and other few.

4). Gin.

5). RUM- Old Monk bottle will cost you rupees 290/-.

There are no prices mentioned on most of the bottles due to some of their own policies. The kick out of these drinks is quite low. I think these are either duplicates or less strong as compared to outside Himachal. Therefore suggested carry your own stuff for more enjoyment.

10). To eat out, I suggest you go to Kunga Guest House. Quite a famous restaurant amongst the westerners. It also has some very good rooms. If you wish you can stay here in room no 301 also known as a Richard Gere Suite. Charges are only Rupees 500/-for a double bed accomodation. Room is excellent. The other excellent room with lot of privacy is D-3 where i stayed. Charges are Rupees 300/-only. The host is excellent and the food very delicious. You can make an advance booking as well by calling up the person Mr.Tenzing Donyo at 09816021180(owner).
