10 Day Visit to Himmachal Pradesh
Hi Mikers
Looking for advice on my itinerary I am ariving in indai on the 15th - planning a 7 day trip that will include new delhi, jaipur, agra and varanasi - planning to fly from varanasi back to delhi and then onto Himmachal First up, should i consider rishikesh and that provice or just stick to Himmachal? We are two backpackers mid twenties, looking to be awed by scenery, trekking, and just generally up for good fun. My planned itinerary for himmichal - shimla, manali, and dharamsala, Can you recommend more places worth visting given our time constraints. Also any hotel recommendations? budget of 1,000 Rupee (for a double) per night We are planning to go from dharamsala to amritsar and then back to delhi. Is there a good night train available or would you recommend flying thanks bmcirish |

Hey Man,
Well, you can head for Chail and Kasauli, enroute to Shimla. Shimla is bit hot these days, so take your sun-screen lotion along with you. You will get good accomodation at all the places with basic amenties. Don't Worry. From Amritsar to Delhi, you can have Satabdhi train. But at Amritsar, do not miss visit to Golden Temple.

Is Simla really hot - I thought it was raining a lot and cooler.. Having just returned from Mussoorie where the monsoon is now really starting and daily damp and wet I imagined Simla would be the same. Look at the weather before you head to HP because you are going in the peak of the wet season- Dharamsala has the 2nd highest rainfall in India. Everything is mouldy and damp at this time of the year. is it the 15th August you are arriving? Then for sure late August will be very wet in those areas. The monsoon goes for almost 3 months up there. Maybe you should consider spending more time in less wet areas - extend your stay in Rajasthan for instance, go to Shekawati region, other areas you might be interested in. Also Gujurat - these two state will probably be the driest of the lot and not too hot in August.

I have visited these few places in Himachal and would recommend few of them to you...but havent done them in one go but in parts...
so you may have to figure our your itinerary 1. Pragpur 2. Dalhousie 3. Naggar 4. Bhakar Nangal 5. Poanta Sahib 6. Sangla 7. Manali 8. Havent been to Mcleodganj but people say its magical I would have recommended you the entire Lahaul Spiti but stay away from it... as you can either do justice to these places or Lahaul Spiti in 10 days.... |

Skip Rishikesh, which is a bit foot-hilly, and head straight to Manali for the fabulous mountain views/trekking/socialising.
Train info is here: Train information Like patialahill said you can get the Shatabdi train from Amritsar to Delhi (about 5 hours), but did you mean D'sala to Amritsar? Train from Dharamsala to Amritsar would look something like this: McLeodganj to Kangra railway station by bus/taxi (leave 1 hour) Train Kangra - Pathankot (about 5 hours) Change stations at Pathankot Train Pathankot - Amritsar (about 3 hours) That's one whole day gone right there. Flying from D'sala I know nothing about, but last time I checked (mid 2006) there weren't that many flights. |
