Yet another Malaria Question...

Hi all -

Just found this site and am so excited!

I lived in India for 8 months during my junior year of college about 3 years ago. I'm almost positive I took Malarone for anti-malaria. It worked well, I had little-no side effects. I was happy.

Now I'm heading back to India for a year. My boyfriend will be there for most of the time so I'm looking for an anti-malaria drug that does NOT lower the effectiveness of birth control. I know doxycycline (sp?) does. I also know I don't want to take Larium due to the potential side effects. Here is the question - in my research, I'm now finding that Malarone isn't supposed to be taken for more than three months at a time.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Know of some other drug I can take?

I really appreciate it!

If you've read the threads on malaria prophylaxis and other immunizations then you've heard this already - please, go and talk to a doctor at a travel clinic, it's the best source of the best information.

If you had taken Malarone for 8 months it's most painful (and unforgettable) reminder would have been in your pocketbook, would have run into many hundreds of dollars.

You could try Larium before you leave. Most people don't get side effects. The other combination is chloroquine and proganuil. Switch between every few months.
