What would you do? Malaria tablets.

I am visiting India for 26 days in December/January. We land in Kolkata and are there for three days before heading up to Jaldapara and the Darjeeling area. We are there for for the next 21 days (doing community service and treking the Singalia Ridge) before returning to Kolkata for two days and then flying out.
I have visited a travel clinic here in Australia and they said that given the time of the year and the duration of time in Kolkata malaria tablets would not be required (provided I use lots of DEET).
I have a prescription for doxy but after reading the side effects and that I would need to take it whilst treking and experiencing the effects of altitude I am in two minds.
Are mozzies that much of a problem in Kolkata at that time of year? What would you do?

Thanks .. I searched for info regarding the possibility of malaria in Kolkata at that time of the year (December) but could not find anything using the AND function.
