drwho, zypher, glad to be of help

Water table at least in kerala rises dramatically during monsoon. i have seen open wells with water just about at the ground level -

when i was a kid, we had an open well back at our home in kerala that was as deep as 50 feet or so. water used to go almost down to the bottom in summer, and used to rise up to around 1-2 meters below ground level during the rains.

Special equipments? hmmm.... Carry an umbrella and maybe wear a nice rain coat.
I guess I can buy those from India? Shouldn't be very expensive stuff.

By the way, nice pictures Bigzero, I'm waiting for seeing the monsoons in reality!

No, they'll take up too much space and be too heavy to carry around and probably too hot. And don't use your Nubuck boots either, I don't think they would survive a monsoon rain/flood, save them for dry or damp conditions. You will find a pair a rubber flip-flops or some kind of cheap sandel will be best. Or even some light canvas shoes/sneakers/trainers. I wouldn't go barefoot. You can get anything you need in India--and cheaper.

I was in Delhi during the summer monsoon and it was dramatic. Mostly people just run for cover and wait it out. Or get wet. Everyone already described it and Bigzero's post and pics were wonderful.

Good to know your opinion, too! I have some kind of rubber sandals that I have bought here, I guess they'll be just fine. And of course I will buy more stuff from India. I was thinking about that carrying thing myself, too. Yes, rubber boots really take a lot of space and they are heavy too!

So my Teva sandals should do the trick?

The other day, I was standing by my Sleeper class coach's door dead at night when all were asleep. the train from Vijaywada to Chennai was ambling along the tracks medium speed. It had just stopped raining after a long spell. Middle of the night, the only lights coming from the signals, it was a magical moment as I peered into the cool, moving darkness, finding only ghostly shadows of trees and heard a million sounds of harmony amongst the wilderness we passed. Frogs, toads, crickets, beetles, cicadas, reptiles, bugs, night birds, insects that are never seen...each making its own music to match the clackety clack of the steel wheels of my train.

Yeah! monsoon is great fun!

Hi BigZero,
I am going to curse you for some time now. You have made me very nostalgic and I just need to pass this day just thinking those.
Wonderful Post and you could be a writer (or already you are?)
What is most interesting in you posts is that references to the IMD website and quite a good interesting info on monsoons.
I was a student of Atmospheric Science from Andhra University some time back from the department of meteorology. By any chance you?
Again Superp Post. (If you have not written any books, go for it, NOW)

-----------
World is still not enough

Andhra University? Familiar territory. Where was your college? Within the Science Block or across the road close to the CWC?

In the Science Campus Near the main gate and Administrative building.
It is called Department of Meteorology and Oceanography.
Are you from there too?

Hi Webtraveller! thanks for the compliments! I am flattered!

I am neither a writer nor a weather guy - monsoon just seems to inspire me!

and rangss, thanks again, but those photos aren't mine! i just linked them from the web.

i am itching for the monsoon to start so that i can escape into some village to experience the rain!

by the way, have you been in deep jungle while it is raining heavily? it is an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime....
