Weather in August?
Hi!
I've been on this forum for the past couple of days and its truely an amazing resource... and here I was thinking nothing can beat Lonely Planet books for good quality info! Anyhow, I am planning to go to India in mid August for one and a half months. The thing is, I'd really rather avoid heat and humidity. So I was wondering whether you guys know what the weather's like sort of around India (I know its huge but roughly, as in what its like in South India, North India, etc). I think I want to go to Delhi, Kolkatta, but I haven't made plans to go any further south (as I'm guessing the weather would be extreme). If you think its unbearable in certain parts, can you suggest were I can go which is relativly comfortable. Thanks. |

Mid August is end of monsoon so the worst is already over and temperatures are lower than in may, june and july in the north. but because of the monsoon it does get humid at this time. southern india and western india (bombay, goa) are humid all year round but again temperatures will be a few degrees below those in june and july.
if you are in the north you may want to go to the hills (dharamsala, manali etc) if you are in kolkata then you can go up to darjeeling and sikkim.

dharamshala would've endless rain (I love it
) so would manali. Most of India is pretty romantic this time of the yr. with so many water-falls & mist. In case looking for a lost love, this is the time & the place to be (India as whole) ![]() |

Thanks guys for the info. much appreciated. So basically what I've gathered so far is that: The south of India would be very humid and pretty hot around mid August. And the north (Dharamshala, manali, etc) would be very wet.
Like how wet does it get, like flooding and stuff? I mean would I be alright with my umbrella? Is it difficult to sight-see and really explore the places if its that wet? Cheers. |

Monsoon is unpredictable so you may find that in mid august Delhi has mild rains every day for a week, may have no rains at all, may rain heavily once or twice a week...in fact you can get along fine even without an umbrella in delhi...
Hills will have more rain (u need umbrella) than the plains but not bad. Rain/monsoon is a celebration in northern india... it is welcomed. Bombay, Goa will be pleasant too but much more wet (u need a basic water proof jacket). Bombay had serious flooding -many people died- last year in august. Still monsoon remains the favourite season for many...the sea is big and beautiful in the monsoon! |
