filters

it really depends what u want to use it for. there r some filters u can use to get clean water from a dirty hep. infested puddle which maybe useful if trekking miles from anywhere.
my advice is to use iodine to kill everything in any suspect water & then use a cheapish carbon filter to filter out the iodine taste

from my understanding iodine is OK for short time spans
However prolongued use can has implications for your health

Depending on which part of India you're in and the time of the year the water is OK to drink

The south especially kerela has safe drinking water
I drank the water throughout India and only got ill drinking what i was assured was filtered safe water in the salvation army in Calcutta and in the mountains...through my own supidity after being warned of gardia in the area's water supply

However, if you're heading to India for a while it may be a good? idea to acustom yourself to the water...you may get ill the first time but persevere and your body will be able to tolerate the water.

Hope this helps

do not drink the water!! Your body cannot grow accustomed to amoebas. There is no point wasting your trip in the washroom. No matter what you do you will get a little sick on your first trip, don't make it worse or rosk your well being by drinking the water. Bistleri (bottled brand) water is available readily and is inexpensive, and tastes much better than iodine.

even

if only goin for 2 weeks, you should avoid buying bottled water. there's enough plastic around. use iodine, a filter, sterotabs, whatever. you quickly become accostomed to the taste, & if not buy some lemon juice to cover it.

Puri tabs are iodine based and all you need to use is 1 or 2 tablets in each litre of water. Being iodine based the treated water does taste of iodine. However, you can also buy tablets which give the treated water a neutral taste.
