Was sick on the plane :-(

Hello,

I just recently returned from a wonderful adventure in Kolkata and Goa for 3 weeks. The entire time I was there I remained healthy and even ate a few things off of the streets of Kolkata. (nothing too crazy -- dal puris and jalabis... was dying for some kati rolls, but got them from a restaurant)

I'm from Toronto, and on the way to London, I had an unusally larger amount of gas, although no other issues. This continued on the way to Kolkata from London.

The entire time there I had no issues, in fact had mostly the opposite problems. :-)

However, on the plane ride from Kolkata to London, it wasn't so pleasant. I thought it was just the same build up of gas that I had on the way there, some sort of weird altitude issue, but I was wrong!

I had some diarreha, plus vomitting... this occured a few times and I let it run hoping it would end. No such luck... Immodium took care of things for the plane ride, but it started up again 24 hours later in London. (spent a few days there to see the city) After that it ended and there was no return...although I took some Immodium as a safety measure back on the flight back to Toronto.

Anyone know why the plane seemed to trigger something whether it be gas on the way there, and vomitting and diarreha on the way back? :-)

When I went to get my vaccinations the nurse told me not to drink anything on the plane on the way back from India because they stock it up with water and ice there before it leaves. I know that may seem obvious to alot of people but I probably wouldn't have thought twice about plane drinks being "safe". That may not help in your case because even if you had a drink with bad ice on the plane home it probably wouldn't affect you that quickly. But I guess it's possible...

Oops...

OK, she didn't say not to drink ANYTHING, just nothing that's not bottled/in a can and no ice. Just wanted to clarify that...

Yup, I only had bottled water on the plane...even though it was British Airways...

Now that I think about it, it happened about a half hour after the nasty spraying they did... could be a reaction to that? Doubt it.

I fell sick immediately after my plane rides to and from India (on British Airways). I think it was some airborne virus that I might have picked up from some other passenger.

It's weird, because a similar thing happened to me between HKG and Vancouver on Cathay...I was totally healthy all through INdia, but i vomitted and had diarreha the whole way once i got on the plane..

I was really ill though..Thought maybe i ate something not so good in the HKG airport..

How long does it take a stomach bug to make you sick?

I had a bad time immediately after returninga few years back (after two healthy weeks in India). I blame the Sri Lankan airlines prawns, though it was some hours after eating them that the err, fun began.

I think, the next time u take the flight to or out of India, u must pack ur sandwiches and bring some water from home.

Don't have anything in the flights.

I think you must have eaten something bad in India.
I have experience high stomach acidity for almost the last month now in India and I had this problem before. It is due to the spicy food. I now avoid the spicy food.
But I have been unlucky to eat a bad samosa on a train through Bihar and next day I have been having bad stomach problems, it has been 3 days now that I am ill. I am heavily medicated on 3 sets of antibiotics and I hope that it will soon go away.
however my husband and I both had a very bad stomach flue that was goping around in Arambol during Christmas time. it was 2 days of hell.

so I say that you definetly got something in India and it took time for the symptoms to show up.

Oh what a lousy Christmas

When we get ill we tend to blame the last thing we ate --- I wonder how many times it was the thing before, or the thing before that.

We also tend to to say "I thought there was something funny about....", maybe we are right, maybe, again it was something else.

A great local medicine for acid stomach and queasiness is Gelucil.

I suspect that greater quantities of oil, and diffderent oils used, are as much if not more repsonsible for a lot of mild tummy upsets than higher quantities of spice. Just my theory. (well, actually it is someone else's theory...).

Wishing you well, passingby: hope your stomach lets you start enjoying India again soon!

That was most likely the cause, yes. Spicy food was not an issue for me as from the first day I was eating the spiciest of curries even too hot for the Indian family I was travelling with! Then in Goa there were some fantastic burning hot dishes (home cooking, not restaurants) I couldn't get enough of the spicy food.

No one else got sick and they ate the same food, although they weren't on the same flight with me and are returning this weekend.

Weird... anyway I recovered very quickly and it wasn't so bad. I'm glad I had Immodium on me though!

ah, don't be too quick to doubt the toxicity and possible reactions of the "nasty" spraying that they do on the airplanes. this has been discussed on IM before, so i will not get too wordy here, but will just say that i feel it is prudent to take some sort of preventative precautions against the pesticides that are sprayed in the cabin, a completely closed environment with no fresh, only recycled stale air. it may not have caused your particular problem, but it can certainly cause deletrious reactions.

i use a botanical immune formula (something with echincea) and have a hankerchief with essential oils, generally lavender and eucalyptus, that i hold to my nose and mouth while they are spraying, and for a while thereafter.
