Oh, oh, oh! You can use valium for anxiety? Because I have panic attacks every time I enter an airport, even if just to drop someone off, and am dreading all the flights I'll have to take to get to India (the plane doesn't bother me, but it takes about 2 hours to calm down, so I'm usually at another airport by then if domestic). If it actually helps, that would be wonderful! Does it leave you loopy like benadryl and stuff does? Can you function while taking it, or is it "take when you're ready to go to sleep?"
yes, i have used benzos for anxiety in the past, and i took some to india just in case.
i use xanax (alprazolam) which i have been advised is preferable to valium because you take it in smaller doses and it has a gentler kick in. it will still leave you drowzy, but you can take it in amounts that still allow you to get on with things. never mix with alcohol - that's how date rapists work.
that said, all benzos are addictive and you should take them under doctor's supervision. but anxiety is a real issue for many, and medication is one way to help deal with the worst of the symptoms. and for those of you who haven't had a panic/anxiety attack or an anxiety disorder perhaps it might be best if you didn't freely hand out advice on what has been described as one of the worst life experiences possible.
jyoti - the best thing that happened to me when i was suffering from anxiety was my sister giving me a book called 'Complete Self Help for Your Nerves' by a Dr Claire Weekes. this, plus cbt and medication helped me conquer my anxiety pretty much for good. the book is still being published, take the effort to track it down, it is the best self help book for anxiety that i have come across, and i have read a few.
anxiety is awful, but you can get through it - good luck.

i havent read that one but another fantastic one is 'living with it' (cant remember the author - bev someone i think?). it is a cartoon style book written by a woman who has had panic attacks herself. its fantastic either to read once, or pull out time and time again when u feel the anxiety coming on. i have also read a fair few and that was the only one that really worked for me!

Nope, I don't agree.
Just try this in an area far away from your med. college, I'm sure you won't get 10 Valiums without a prescription. The pharmacies in the area of your college usually recognise you as a med. student and give the drug without prescription.
You can get maximum 2/3 tabs without prescription, after so much of requesting.

So, to get more, a prescription is a must. But the funny side of the story is: Doctors in India usually never mention anything about the max.no. of refills for any medicine in the prescriptions and most the pharmacies do not stamp on the prescription after each supply. So, you can buy as many as you want, just ging from pharmacy to pharmacy with just one prescription!!!!!

Never heard of someone being penalised for getting caught with these types of drugs, such as Bezos and Low-dose-pain killers, without a script. Infact, who is going to catch you? Indian police officers have lot of wirks to do with their foots on their tables .

I like others use valium for the long haul train journeys. For me it's a must, I'm a very light sleeper and without "mothers little friend" a 40 hour journey would entail staying awake for 40 hours something I don't relish!!

Lately I've noticed a reluctance on the part of pharmacies to issue these drugs without prescription. Far more than there used to be, the authorities are cracking down on this in India I'm told by chemists, rightfully so.
So whilst you will probably find somewhere that will sell valium to you it is no longer the norm I feel!

actually, I'm a student in America so the pharmacies in India have no cause to recognize me, haha.

just about every medical shop I went to in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Bangalore gave me whatever I needed... and I brought back plenty of valium and ativan (lorazepam) for sleepless nights.

the lure of meds at any pharmacy is a huge lure for many western tourists outside of their 'western' countries... i.e. all over Africa and all over Asia it's easy to go into pharmacies for drugs.

I've wondered this, too - there's a lot of them knocking around here in Goa. Amyl Nitrate / Poppers, perhaps? Anyone know?

amy, thanks for that, i will follow up, even though anxiety is no longer really an issue.
the one i mentioned is written by an australian and is still easily available at angus and robertson (and others i suppose) for about $20.
for a while there i used to sleep with it under my pillow - that is how comforting i found it!
cheers and good luck.

If its K, I've yet to see any of the slobbering, drooling people that you get at squat parties in London. Mind you, the season's yet to start properly ...

These bottles look pharmaceutical, though - ie as if they've been bought over the counter. If Ketamine's for sale without prescription here in Goa there's gonna be some really messy parties this year.

Ketamine has been available over the counter for a long time as has speed Dr F and as you rightly say it is messy, already been a few reported deaths.
Not all chemists will sell you this shit but there are a few unscrupelous chemist that do an interesting side trade in these drugs and make a very tidy profit as well!!
There was an article in the Gomantak Times that showed piles of these little brown bottles dredged out of a pond near a well known party site, there were hundreds of them!!!
I've heard descriptions of using K and it sounds like horrible stuff and very dangerous to boot!!

God, it's gonna be a weird old season then!

I wouldn't touch it myself - horse tranquilizers have never really been my scene. People tripping on K aren't pretty - I don't care how good the high is, really wouldn't want to do that to myself.

Herbal alternative for anxiety

For those of you who are very nervous travellers and would like an alternative to pumping chemicals into yourselves ( ) why don't you try:

Motherwort tabs.

Available from any good healthstore in UK or Ireland at least(and to anyone else via the Internet). On the little plastic bottle it states that they're for "heavy leg feeling" BUT that description was added and the "has a tranquilising effect" description was taken off, after pharmaceutical companies complained a couple of years back.

Two tabs taken at the begining of a long haul flight will send you to sleep with no problem. One tab before you leave home for the airport will make you relaxed. NO SIDE EFFECTS! NO POSSIBLE CHANCE OF O'D'ing. BUT they WILL make you very relaxed and promote wellbeing and sleepiness.

I swear by them - for travelling and if I have one of those very fraught days coming up!

Good info...
And the health concerns that any drug-related thread wouldent be complete without, including a little NA advice.

iridescent,
That easy huh? I never thoght of India as the old mexio of the East, as it pertains to the topic at hand..
Though have heard stories about the prevelance of street junk, etc..

...Its good to know that I can get a lil relief out there,
the safe and half-legal way.

Any other experiences?

I walked up to a pharmacy in Delhi, a little bit away from Paharganj and asked for Valium and the guy said, "Valium? No." and I asked where to get some and he told me to try the main bazaar. I walked up to the first pharmacy I saw and said, "I need some sleeping pills" and the guy said, "Why you need sleep?" and I said "Sleeping pills" and he sighed, walked over to a cabinet and cut me off 10 0.25mg generic Xanax pills. Cost: 20 rs. Haven't used any of them, but it's nice to know they're there (both for anxiety and sleeplessness).
