Best is to go to a travel doctor/many universities or large clinics will at least have a travel department. Then get everything you can afford!! Well people will disagree we're sure, but there is so much you can't avoid here, it is nice to know there are at least a few things you don't have to worry about catching.

Better safe than sorry...a travel doctor told me to get the following:
Hepatitis A&B, typhoid, meningitis and influenza vaccines. I had boosters of (MMR) mumps-measles & ruebella and a booster of tetanus and diptheria. I also took Malarone malaria pills. traveler's health link: http://www.cdc.gov/travel/ |

Vaccines
I am getting Typhoid and Hep A (already had MMR and so forth), and bringing some naturopathic malaria meds with me. I did the same for my first trip to India in '99.
I won't be in any risk areas during Japanese encephalitis transmission season so I am not getting the vaccine. I read that the CDC is no longer recommending meningococcal vaccine for travelers to India so I am not getting that one.....CDC also says that "The risk of cholera to U.S. travelers is so low that vaccination is of questionable benefit." How much did everyone's immunizations cost? I'm going next week and am wondering how much it'll set me back. |

Hep A, and Tetanus was covered under my medical insurance but I had to pay for Typhoid (USD88) and Malaria (USD50). Ouch.

now, I'm no doctor, but I wouldn't give a rat's ass for a naturopathic remedy for malaria.
Don't take it personal, just my opinion |

Malaria vaccine looks like it's for real. I just did a quick search and found this link. http://www.malariavaccine.org/ Hope it pans out and provides decent protection.

I think most Doctors would concur with you in not giving a "rat's ass" for a naturopathic remedy, Bijapuri.

Vaccine for malaria is a long way off as the disease is marvelously adaptive. Naturopathic is a fool's paradise but for a Chinese herbal which is being refined as a serious medicine Wall Street Journal)..

Perhaps NewYorkKid can give a few more details about the Malaria shot he mentioned in an earlier message.
My brief web searching mentioned that clinical trials were underway on a vaccine. I also found mention of Billy Gates giving 100 million US$ for Malaria vaccine research. Have often wondered how much XP code was done by Indian programmers? Glad to see Bill is giving something back. Wanderer22 |

Anti malarial
There were clinical studies done on the Chinese herb Artemisia annua (Qing Ho) that showed it to be an even more effective than chloroquine as an anti-malarial, but I'm not sure how much validity to give this research.
Fortunately, I'm going to be living in a low-risk area (can't imagine having to take meds for years at a stretch! - would sure love to see a vaccine sometime in the near future) |
